Although the exterior with its skulls and cross bones looks like Captain Jack Sparrow May have built it; this is a gorgeous little church and right on the mask. Street of the old city.

This is one of the many interesting churches in Matera. It's easy to find. The building itself is very unique, with bones/skulls in the facade.

We weren't sure initially why the church had all the skulls and skeletons etc but were then told it was associated with purgatory. Worth a visit due to the unusualness of the place.

Walking past the Church of Purgatory commands your attention, due to the macabre images of skulls and skeletons. In this wonderful city of rupestrian churches, sadly the ‘normal’ churches get a little left behind and this beautiful church, merits seeking out in its own right....More

This church is part of the baroque section of Matera and has a unique facade representing a bishop's headgear ("mitre"). The facade is interesting and decked out in skulls and crossbones.
