The facade and front door is wonderfully quirky - it's another Italian church but there are some interesting things to see otherwise which make it alittle unique.

Church with a very interesting façade, it also did not disappoint with the high quality and unusual iconography of the paintings inside. I was fascinated by the pulpit as well.

The skull and crossbones on the door and carved into the stone of this unusual little church remind you of your own mortality and this is most certainly the aim of Purgatory Church. On a busy street in the city the outside draws you in...More

This Chiesa is named after Purgaiory. The door is adorned with skulls and there are more skulls inside. Spectacular celing and altar.

Although the exterior with its skulls and cross bones looks like Captain Jack Sparrow May have built it; this is a gorgeous little church and right on the mask. Street of the old city.

This is one of the many interesting churches in Matera. It's easy to find. The building itself is very unique, with bones/skulls in the facade.

We weren't sure initially why the church had all the skulls and skeletons etc but were then told it was associated with purgatory. Worth a visit due to the unusualness of the place.

Intrigued by the facade that included skulls we went inside and were surprised by the impressive interior. Built in 18th century, church is Baroque style and the facade represents the Death and Redemption of the Souls. Easy to spot as it's located on the main...More

There are thousands of churches in Italy & after a while it can seem like overload. However, the Church of Purgatory offers something completely different. Skulls in pontiff hats, crowns & tiaras decorate the doors, and death/crossbone images are found throughout. IMO it is certainly...More
