Climb to the Western peak via the normal route, the route and the view are beautiful, the signage could be improved a little but it's not bad. We left at 7:30 from the observatory so as not to find too many people on the way up and down for lunch. I recommend not having too many people go up on weekends. Next time Direct.

One of the most beautiful places ever seen in my life, scandalous lack of signage of all kinds. Arrived at the ancient source, the few signs were completely rusty or totally erased by time, as well as having stickers of all kinds stuck. We followed a path badly indicated by an indication in very old wood, and then go back for absolute lack of signaling. We moved to the old hotel, which is located at the other end where the cable car arrives and in principle the signage was in the same condition: non-existent. For being the park of the gran sasso, it seems incredible, almost inexplicable, because even a very bad management of the park would not neglect at this point such a thing. Sembra quasi voluto...

The most representative mountain of the entire Apennines, with its dolomite rock and unique scenery. From up there the spaces extend from the Adriatic Sea to the Maiella, the Sirente Velino, the Sibillini, the Terminillo up to the Conero and... beyond. It is worth going up there to enjoy this magnificence.

We went up there by car, which allowed us to enjoy a breathtaking panorama! we don't have enough eyes to see everything, the road is however quite busy and overtaking the camperbuses is a bit complicated, take your picnic, the food in the food trucks in Campo Imperatore is completely bad! you have to pay 5 Euros to park!

We almost got to the cable car station and they stopped us, because according to them the parking lot was full. I've been coming for years and it's never happened. On the other hand, they direct you to a paid chairlift. Everything is done to squeeze tourists.

One a quiet Sunday I decided to climb Corne Grande, the highest peak of the Gran Sasso range.
From Campo Imperatore it was a straight forward and moderate climb to the top by the easy route "via normal". Towards the top the was some scrambling over rocks, but the hardest part of the journey was finding a spot to sit on the crowded summit.
It was a good way to spend the morning (4-6 hours return), and if you go on a clear day the views are fantastic.

Our family wanted to take us to the "montagna" and we couldn't wait! This is way out of what we see in Philadelphia. There were 8 adults and 2 kids and we drove 2 cars up, up and way up to the top of Gran Sasso. Wow, what beautiful views while driving up. The roads are quite narrow and I am afraid of heights but we drove slow so I was ok.
We get to the top and park our car. When you step out of the car, and breathe in that air, it is amazing. So clean and fresh, your lungs can feel it. I was told it was a bit chilly up at the top but we brought jackets and didn't need them. It was August so it was refreshing to not drip in sweat.
There is a lift that takes you to the tippy top so 6 adults and the 2 kids went. They all fit in one lift. At the top there are absolutely breath taking views and great photo opportunities. You can bring an item or photo of a loved one and leave it there, there are many items in memory of loved ones who have lost their life. Then you ring the bell there.
You can stay at the top as long as you would like, you walk around, take photos, explore. It's VERY VERY high up! :)
When we came back down, we got back in our cars and drove to a picnic site. It was awesome. We had blankets, packed food and a ball for the children. We played American baseball with our Italian cousins and ate delicious food with a great atmosphere. Many other families were around, it was so fun.
This was probably my favorite day in Italy. I would have never thought that I would be on the top of a mountain in Italy with my cousins, eating Italian sandwiches enjoying life! It was AMAZING!!!!!! You must must must go see this if you are in the area. You won't be disappointed.

The Gran Sasso national park offers trails for walking, biking or horse riding. The views are fantastic and it's all so easy to access.
We drove to the ski resort of Prati di Tivo and parked near the main square. It was Sunday but most things were open and there were a lot of people there (but not too many!)
The ski lift was open and was taking mostly mountain bikers up to the top of the moutain bike downhill runs. There were a few walkers and climbers going up to the high trails and the high pitches.
We didn't use the ski lift, we walked west along the road away from the main square and took the trail that begins about 200m down the road on the left. The trail takes you to a small but impressive waterfall (cascate rio arno) at 1520m (about a 40mins hike) then on to Le Cappane (Huts) at 1957m (about 2.5 hours) and if you're feeling adventurous you can push on to the Garibaldi refuge hut (Rifugio Garibladi) at 2230m (about 3.5 hours).
On the main trail, not far passed the waterfall, you can make a little detour to visit the Cave of Gold (1680m). It's not signposted but keep an eye out for the cave on your right hand side just above a small wooded area. It's easy to spot.
From the refugio Garibaldi you can go even further and higher if you're equipped for it. You can also push on to the ski centre and observatory at Campo Imperatore. We didn't this because our car was at Prati di Tivo so we just returned on the same trail as we went up.
The trail is really easy to follow and you don't really even need a map and compass (as long as you stay on the trail) but general hiking gear is recommended (particularly if you go high up).

Gran Sasso park is great for hiking and outdoor sports on every level. Only thing thats difficult, is finding information in other languages than italian. The hotel at campo imperatore is a good starting point for many nice hikes, including the 2912 m corno grande

i notice only 19 english views for this park so this must be a true hidden gem. could spend a week or more just hiking around here. the views are spectacular. Italy truly has so much beauty from the Dolomites to Sicily. We are asked why we visit here so much and the gran sasso is another reason. Each corner you drive around creates another wow! keep an eye out for shepherds, sheep, cattle etc. lots of places to park and have a stroll or lunch. will be back.

Salve, vorrei opinioni sulla Direttissima: è fattibile per chi è giovane e abbastanza scaltro, buon camminatore ma non allenato all'arrampicata? Ci sono passaggi davvero pericolosi ed esposti? Grazie mille a chi risponderà

Già da Campo Imperatore si gode di un ottima veduta... salire anche al rifugio duca degli Abruzzi è un po’ impegnativo sia per la salita ma anche per la discesa... io non lo consiglierei...

Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to rent a bike (road bike) in Gran Sasso park. If yes, how does it work (ie. should we reserve prior to arrival? Where is it available in the park?...).
Thank you in advance!!
