Just outside Cathedral of Almundena in front of Calle Bailen is a 3.5 metre tall statue of Pope John Paul II. The statue was sculpted by Juan de Avalos in 1998 to commemorate the Pope's consecration of the cathedral five years earlier (1993). Here you...More

I was walking in Madrid and used TripAdvisor to find things near me. So I walked over to see this statue. It’s nice enough. Nothing special. I don’t know the back story so it was just a statue to me.

We went to visit the Almudena Cathedral. When we were through we went to the back of the church to look at the statue of Juan Pablo II. This is a very good statue of this very popular Pope.

Just outside the side visitor entrance of Catedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena sits this tribute to Pope John Paul II. It is a new statue, installed in 1998 to commemorate his 1993 visit to the church. So there is not a...More

My wife and I visited the Almudena Cathedral and we found the statue of Juan Pablo II behind it. This Pope was much loved, so we were glad that this monument is there.

Estatua de Juan Pablo II is situated in front of the entrance to the cathedral and seems a popular site for people laying flowers etc. and praying in front of it.

The larger than life statue of Pope John Paul II really gets your attention as you leave the Cathedral de la Almudena. I was also moved by the statue 'Homeless Jesus' by Timothy Schmalz which sleeps on a park bench nearby.

It felt like we were being welcomed by the Pope himself as we made our way to the Cathedral. This statue is the first thing you will see as you go up the stairs towards the Cathedral. There is an information board there , however...More

We came passed this statue on the way to the cathedral. We happened to notice it and he is clearly recognizable.

Though sculptor Juan de Avalos has depicted Pope John Paul II as larger than life in this bronze statue by Cathedral de la Almudena, I almost missed it. The work stands off to the left of a secondary entrance on the cathedral's east side above...More

Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street
performers, colorful lights, window shopping,
restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and
churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a
collection of plazas interconnected by a network of
side streets. Some of these side streets are wide
pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so
