Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

This street was one of the highlights of our trip to Madrid. It might only be a relatively short street but it’s one of the best. It’s a warren of tapas bars, with around 50 or so in the one small area. We started at one end and made our way along them, picking and choosing in a random sort of way. The street follows the curves of the original 12th-century city wall and in some of the bars like Posada del Dragon, you can still see remains of some of the wall.
Our top three places were:
1. La Concha
2. Pousada del Dragon
3. Casa Luca
La Concha was our absolute favourite. A tiny place full of character that served an amazing vermouth cocktail and complimentary tapas. They make their own vermouth which they sell at €12 a bottle. We left with our backpack clinking because we'd bought two.

I went in Jan 19 and it was really crowded there. I was with a group of people (20 people) and the waiter couldn't even access the whole table (ok, it was a big table, but there wasn't enough space in the bar). The food was Ok, nothing special, and it was very noisy and loud.

What a terrific part of town in this supremely fun city.
Very authentic and full of locals doing what Spanish do better than any one else.
Socialising and having fun till very very late.

Been to Sevilles Santa Cruz area. That cities tapas zone.
Madrids la latina especially this street is on another level.
Authentic Madrid fun.
Virtually the whole area is closed on Tuesdays I think.
Other wise this area is always full to the brim at night and after the rastro flea market on Sundays it is absolutely insane with people rubbing shoulder to shoulder.
Umnissable Madrid attraction.

This street houses over a dozen tapas restaurants and bars, just within a block or two. It is right next to Plaza Mayor, very easy to get to and close to the center of the city. The area's tapas places are frequented by tourists and locals alike. We found ourselves in La Tempranilla, which I reviewed on TA, and both the food and wine there were excellent. Little or no English was spoken, although there were menus in English available, and there were mostly locals there at the bar while we were eating, so it was not primarily aimed at tourists. As with many Spanish eating establishments, opening times are usually 8-8:30 and the action often doesn't pick up until substantially later. There were a handful of places that were open before 8, and these were geared towards tourists. We were not out past 10 but I'm sure the street must get very lively later in the evening!

It was very busy and lively in the night. It was fun walking around and choosing which restaurant to try. It wasn't too touristy (like Mercado San Miguel) yet, so you feel authentic eating there. If you stay more than one night in Madrid, I will recommend you to try there once!

Despite many trips to Madrid, this was my first venture down Cava Baja, and what a wonderful surprize to find great taverns and tapas of all kinds along the entire length of the street.. diversity, charm, history, fantastic eats and ambiance... starting late afternoon...must do!!!

Although it can be atmospheric, I find it overrated and crowded.....having to work my way to the bar to order the tapas is not my idea of a night out. It is popular though. I would consider a tapas tour here, though.

We were so looking forward to visiting this famous street, renowned for its tapas bars, lively atmosphere etc …….but it was DEAD! (This was between 9.30 – 11.30 on a Tuesday night.) I had filtered for places with outdoor seating, and several Cava Baja places were listed, but none of them had any outdoor seating as far as we could see! The plaza at the far end of the street had a few bars with terraces, but we made an unwise choice in opting for El Bonanno – which was a total disappointment – and then having a meal in La Chata, which was the only place on Cava Baja that seemed to have any life. (See separate reviews.) Perhaps we were there too early…… Anyway, the street was a disappointment. Just wanted to warn people ….

Very lively area, especially if you stay there. It has a lot of bustle but it's a very nice neighborhood with many options and nice bars and it's in the city center.

Don't do a tour. You can do this on your own. Most of these places are very small with limited seating. Some have seating downstairs, but it's more fun to sit or stand by the bar! I recommend you start at Taberna la Concha at #5

What 5 tapas bars do you recommend on Cava Baja?

Tempranillo is the one I went to. James Blick, the food writer for the Guardian recommended it and he was spot on (he also lives in Madrid and runs Madrid Chow). Trip advisor won't let me post a link but if you search guardian 2014
/madrid-tapas-bars-top-10 you'll find a wealth of excellent information.
P.S. We ate non stop, and I'd have to say we thought Tempranillo the best of all so do go!
