The interior of the cathedral undergoes extensive repair in preparation for the holy year 2021. The exterior had been renovated in the last several years. So there won't be pilgrims mass in side the cathedral for all 2019 (possibly longer). That means there won't be...More

We went to the church and it so happened that the Botafumeiro was swinging. I had goose pimples! Thankfully, we were there at the right time.

The English language can't do justice to describe the amazing feeling of being blessed by the smoke and ash of the Botafumeiro. You don't have to be religious at all to enjoy the experience of this mass, put on specifically for the pilgrims of the...More

Happened to be in town on The Feast of Christ the King when the Botafumeiro was swung. The pomp and ceremony surrounding the occasion needs to be seen to be believed.

we were fortunate enough to get to witness the swing of the Botafumeiro. unfortunately this is only swung at certain times. If you ask at the Cathedral when it is going to swing unfortunately they can not tell you

If you haven’t seen it, you must. It occurs at the noon mass in the cathedral and is sponsored usually upon and by a group of pilgrims ending their Camino. There is a cost involved to sponsor, but an incredible site.

We were fortunate enough to have been able to witness this event. It was beyond my expectations. We arrived and learned that this only takes place 7-8 times per year and it it not announced. This was my main reason for visiting to Santiago so...More

Agree you should be on one of the sides. Front rows are less obstructed but to get full view of swing over your head, further back might be better.

You dont need tickets, is part of the mass. Every Fryday at 19:30 or when somebody makes an offering.
