About
The Fundació Joan Miró was created by Miró himself, at first principally with works from his own private collection, with a desire to set up an internationally recognised centre in Barcelona for Miró scholarship and contemporary art research, and to disseminate the collection. The Fundació opened to the public on 10 June 1975 and has since become a dynamic centre in which Joan Miró's work coexists with cutting-edge contemporary art. The Fundació is located in a building designed by Josep Lluís Sert, making it one of the few museums anywhere in the world in which the complicity between artist and architect underpins the dialogue between the works and the space that houses them. The Fundació offers an overview of the landscapes of Joan Miró's art and life, creating an enriching dialogue with other artists from the 20th and 21st centuries.

- IvanSusanin1613Cleveland, Ohio201 contributionsA delightful collection of Miro’s workThis is apparently the world‘s largest collection of Miro’s work. It covers several floors so you should a lot at least two hours if you’re a Miro fan like us. The explanatory plaques are in Catalan, Spanish, and English, so one can practice one’s Spanish and attempt to pick up some Catalan, at least passively. Miro might be a fine introduction to Surrealism for children, since his oeuvre is less potentially scary than that of Dalí. There is a nice café with a courtyard and a gift shop with books, tchotchkes, and posters. The museum is located atop Mont Juic, so there is good access to other museums and pleasant walks.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 October 2023
- keithmalinGuildford, United Kingdom346 contributionsMain exhibition closed until 20 October, but still worth itMiro’s work is unique and somehow compelling, and the Foundation has plenty on offer to confirm that, set on the Montjuic hill to the south of Barcelona. There is the compulsory gift shop, bookshop and cafeteria as well to keep you occupied. Just to note that the main exhibition area is closed until 20 October 2023. Prices are reduced as a result. It’s still worth the visit if you haven’t been before, and there’s a pleasant walk back down into town afterwards.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 October 2023
- Susanne EBouches-du-Rhone, France40 contributionsAmazing! Go see the showI came on the opening day of the Miro- Picasso show. I highly recommend going. Excellent idea to show the 2 friends together, to be able to see how they inspired each other. I could have spent more time here but had an afternoon flight so I had to rush a little. Also a lot less crowded than the Picasso museum.Thank you for choosing our museum and enjoying Miró's art!Written 6 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 October 2023

- RobDavis12Cardiff, United Kingdom221 contributionsA must for art lovers. A fantastic galleryThe museum (Fundació de Joan Miró) is situated on the hill overlooking Barcelona and can be reached by taxi, bus, metro (with a walk) and the Montjuïc Furnicular Railway. There are all the usual facilities, toilets, lockers, café. The restaurant just off the self service café can be booked from 1.00, in a nice room overlooking the gardens, with table service and menu offering great Catalan food. For us, it made the visit complete. There’s a pleasant, shortish walk through a park to the other main museum in the area, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, although we split our visit over two days as there’s rather a lot to see in both. A must for art lovers and a great half day out.Thank you for sharing your experience at the museum!Written 3 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024
- Steve_of_N21London, United Kingdom3,273 contributionsExcellent museum well worth the money.I thought this was an excellent museum and, unlike a lot of tourist attractions in Barcelona, I thought it was good value for money, especially as concessions for students and seniors are provided. The collection of Joan Miro’s works is laid out across some 15 galleries of varying sizes and the exhibition provides very good information on his life, his different style periods and on each individual work. You can take cameras into the exhibition but you cannot take bags or food and drink and this is well signposted and explained when you buy the tickets at the desk and free lockers are provided for your stuff so it is not a problem, so feel free to ignore the one post knob head below. We enjoyed seeing the evolution of work at this museum and the influence on other artists. While not the greatest art museum we've visited, this was perfectly nice. We enjoyed the rooftop and terraces, and found the mercury fountain fascinating. Worth a trip if you purchase the Articket!

The minute you walk up and see the Miro sculptures on the grassy area, it's a sight to see. Very contemporary in design, houses one of the best collections of Miro. An assortment of very large canvases and small ones too. Best to go through with a tour guide or the head set is a must. Plan on 1-3 hours at best.

a must when in Barcelona, even if sometimes very crowded with people not knowing how to behave in a museum... it would be nice if there would be some restricted opening hours, for example when there are no kids allowed to run around, taking the museum for a playground. but the house itself and the exhibition make up for that. for tourists with the Barcelona card: the entrance fee is included.

We looked around the pictures by Joan Miro, shopped at both shops and had an excellent lunch in the restaurant.
All good so far.
However, as we left and still on museum property, we hailed a taxi but we were immediately sprayed with bird poo by pickpockets. They urged us into a nearby area and wiped us down with tissues. We thought this a kind gesture but after returning to our hotel we realised we had been robbed. This spoiled the whole trip. It would be a good idea to increase security in the museum’s grounds. Even warning signs would help.

I found the museum to be quite interesting, with a large variety of works by Miro. However, the English guided tour was horrible. The guide walked us through each and every painting and sculpture in the museum, and provided us with endless information (sometimes contradicting what she said earlier). Also, her English was not fluent enough, so the 90-minute tour included a lot of pauses when she was looking for words. I expected to get some tools for understand Miro’s work, but instead - ended up understanding him less than when I entered the museum.

The space is well decorated and the masterpieces are well disposed.
However, Miro’s style is very particular, sometimes very strange and not very explicit.
The access to the foundation is relatively easy and the place is really cool.

This is an amazing Museum. Seeing the work of Mirō within a building influenced by him and for this sole purpose, immerses you in his creativity. An amazing 22 rooms and many outdoor spaces with installations. To understand what influenced him on his creative journey makes everything flow perfectly.

Yes, the Mercury Fountain by Alexander Calder is still in the Joan Miró Foundation.
It was a gift from Calder to the Foundation because of his friendship with Joan Miró.

Hola,

(translated from English response).

Здравствуйте, подскажите, большие ли очереди в Фонд Жоана Миро в июле - августе? Стоит покупать билеты заранее? Спасибо!
Written 18 July 2017
Hi Ludmila!
Thanks for your interest in the Fundació Joan Miró. You can definitely get your advanced tickets at the Foundation's website. With your online ticket, you can skip the line and go directly to the access point of the exhibition.
If you're interested in visiting other museums in Barcelona, make sure to check our Articket BCN page, for discounted admission to six museums in the city.
Hope you enjoy your visit! Please let us know if you have any other questions!

Take the 55 bus from Placa de Catalunya and it will let you off in front of the Museum... and take the bus home from a few feet away. You can take the Metro, but you have a walk up a substantial 'hill' to get to the museum..
If you want to explore the Poble Sec neighborhood (and there are some really good eats there) take the bus to the Museum, then walk down through the park when you're finished and you're in the heart of the neighborhood. Then you can take the Metro home.
