Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We drove there for a short break. Absolutely beautiful drive down from the GM2 main road and more than worth it for that alone. We were off peak and parking is utterly impossible anywhere near the port end. We found a slot probably about a mile away bought a coffee from a small place that excelled itself for crass unfriendliness and ate sandwiches on a seat along the fine promenade. We came here by boat last year and you really need a cycle to appreciate this long linear development. It’s not really set up for day trippers and is dominated by apartments at the port end and holiday homes in the rest, predominantly owned by the large German community. So, your rating will depend on why and for how long you go, hence the on the fence three stars. The boat trip from Playa Santiago is well worthwhile for the coastline.

Stayed here for 2 nights while on a walking holiday. Very touristy down near the beaches (compared to other parts of the island) but this offers a greater range of eating places. Good walking available close by but probably best with a car.

This town located at the end of the Valle Gran Rey Ravine. IT IS a small coastal town, accessible by ferry, with some beaches, especially La Calera, which is wonderful, with a restaurant and some picturesque houses. It is a quiet place to spend the day, or even stay, a haven of peace and tranquility

We were visiting the area for a week and within the tranquility of the island is the area I recommend you. The sandy beaches of Calera and English. The beachfront hotel. Places to eat fish I fry very rich. A place to have a drink listening to music.
I will definitely repeat in this area.

Walked here from the church about half way to the top and really deserved a good lunch followed by a cooking dip in the sea. Wish we had thought about how hot the black sand would be as it took us by surprise in October. Everyone else on the beach must have had asbestos backing to their towels as they seemed to be sitting comfortably.

We spend two weeks holiday in this region, from 10th to 24th October in Playa la Calera.
The town of Valle Gran Rey includes the three villages of La Calera, La Puntilla and Vueltas.
During our holiday we walked along the Promenade de Playa de la Calera, it took us through La Calera, La Puntilla leading to Vueltas and the Port. En route we visited the beaches of the three villages and the Port
Walking away from the seafront we strolled through the narrow streets where we saw unusal buildings, wall art, oddities all combining to create an adventure filled with surprises.
The unusual sights are side by side with historic, traditional, commercial and cultural buildings.
There are numerous restaurants, cafés, bars and a wide variety of artisan, souvenir and supermarkets throughout the region
The Valley is formed by the two large cliffs, La Merica 983 metres high on one side and Teguerguenche 497 metres on the other.

La Gomera is a beautiful island, with a fantastic natural setting that invites you to go hiking, and there are also wonderful beaches. The island is small enough to get anywhere quickly by car, so the apartment in Valle Gran Rey on the beach was actually a good choice. The beach (La Calera) is great.
What La Gomera, at least in Valle Gran Rey, is not, contrary to expectations, is a quiet corner where you can relax. The beach in Valle Gran Rey is a source of constant music and partying, which wasn't really what brought me to La Gomera. The guests of the countless restaurants sit on the street until 1 a.m. in loud conversation, and sometimes there are big parties here that often go on until 5 a.m. and for several days. If you want to get up early and go to bed early to avoid the great heat while hiking, you can forget about that.
The mix of different cultures is nice, mainly Spanish speaking people also from South America, everything looks happy and peaceful.

I found it unspeakably dull. It's a drab, low-rise resort with mediocre restaurants on one side and tedious hobby cafes on the other. A very long drive from anywhere and a long haul out. I had to rate it, but if I had a choice, not even a one.

Valle Gran Rey is a unique place, with excellent weather all year round ideal for resting and relaxing. Enjoy walks, beach, fishing, gastronomy and above all peace. Modest prices, friendly and willing service in most cases. Mix between tourism and tradition. It is an excellent place to spend a few days as a couple or as a family.
Possibly one of the best sunsets in Canary Islands. If you do not know him go without thinking, if you know him repeat.
I'll be back soon.

Valley Gran Ray is on the west coast of La Gomera. Although a trip to get here it's well worth it.
As you descend in to the Valley it's like entering another world. The geographical and geological situation is awe inspiring. It literally takes your breath away.
The magic keeps happening as you drive into the village. The tranquil peacefulness envelopes you. There's a magical quality about this place.
Hiking is the main attraction and the surrounding hills valleys and mountains don't disappoint.
I loved it here and hope to return one day ❤️

Does any one know how long it takes to drive from Valle Gran Rey to the ferry?
We have a ferry booking at 7:45 am.
Written 15 August 2018
You can normally do this journey in 75/90 mins, but
Low clouds up in the mountain can reduce visabillity,so i would air on the side of caution and allow 2hrs +

we are staying here for 2 weeks in November we want to do some walking but I am no good With climbing mountains and heights is there any flatish walks anywhere on the island anyone can recommend ? We are also thinking about hiring a car
Written 10 May 2018
There are some flat walks within the national park at the top of the island. Also you can walk in El Cedro.
The best way to rent a car is from Tenerife airrport. Cicar is the best company. You have to inform that you will take the car on the ferry to La Gomera. The fee is only 10 euros and you have transportation both on Tnerife and La Gomera.

We are visiting Valle Gran Rey in April and are driving there from San Sebastian. Can anyone tell us how long it might take and if it is well signposted. Thank you
Written 24 March 2018
It takes 1 hour and it is very well sign posted. However there are a lot of viewpoints that you might want to stay on the way.

Hey there,
We're visiting Valle Gran Rey soon and we're very excited!
Does anyone know of a place where we can either rent or buy a baby chair in Valle Gran Rey (for eating at a table)? We have a toddler of ten months and the hotel doesn't offer one.
Thanks!

VG

How is the road from playa santiago to valle gran rey? Is it very steep and windy? We are cycling around, with our lugage on the bikes.
And from VGR to Agulo, or to San Sebastian?
From san sebastian to playa santiago was okay, but more wind and steeper climbs may be goo challenging.
Written 7 June 2017
Yes. Very steep and windy. You must be nuts cycling it.
