This church, with three levels of surrounding galleries, is named after the town's patron saint. Johann Sebastian Bach was baptised in the 1503 font there on 23 March 1685 when he was two days old. When he was a bit older he was a choirboy...More

This is among the best of the churches/cathedrals we saw on our 16 day tour through Germany/Austria/Switzerland. This church has connections with both Luther and Bach! In fact, four Bach family members have been organists at this church. Well worth the time to visit.

A beautiful church which can be overlooked among all the famous churches in Eastern Germany. Neat ironwork gates before the church entrance.

We were lucky enough to be here for a free Organ recital which included pieces written by Bach! The Organ is outstanding and just knowing that both Luther and Bach were inspired in this place , provides a sense of special wonder.

We came here as part of a Reformation Germany tour. I had no idea that Bach was also connected to Luther and the Reformation until we came here. Worth seeing, but not a knockout.

Be sure to notice the ornate circle on the gate at the front door. Look for the letters JSB. The truly frightening statue of Bach in the foyer was put there by the Nazis. The organ/ choir loft is really lovely.

Both the exterior and the interior of the church are well worth a visit; however, the church is also a historical site. Luther preached here just before being taken to the Wartburg castle, where he translated the Bible into German. J. S. Bach was baptized...More

Lots of church history here. The Reformation probably had its beginnings here because Luther worshiped here as a student. This church was the Bach family church as well, and the font is still here. We were too early for an organ practice session, but enjoyed...More

This is the place for a quiet moment during your tour of the region. Read up on the history, breathe the history, and --if your lucky-- listen to an organ recital or practice. A must-do.
