Having read the raving reviews of Rüttenscheider Street, we took the Underground to Rüttenscheider Stern to explore the area. We were probably expecting too much and late afternoon on a rainy early January day probably wasn’t the best of times to visit. Fact is, we...More

It's a long street with just about everything you need. All in all, it's probably the best part of Essen, but it can be a little claustrophobic as there are so many people on a sunny day. Good for a walk and shopping.

It has a "small town" atmosphere with tree lined streets and pleasant pavement cafes (in the warmer months) and a good selection of restaurants, cafes and speciality shopping. However, just nearby the Ruttenscheiderstrasse...More

It's just another commercial street, albeit cute, reminding me a little of the commercial street in Geneva, Switzerland and the 16th Street Mall in Denver Colorado. Not bad but nothing special. You can always walk and find somewhere to eat out or sit and have...More

For the best cultural and food experience, go to the South of the city. Some big hotels are close-by. Direct subway connectioion from central, but it's not too far for a casual walk.
