A bit depressing collection
Aug 2021
As a lover of classical art, I had high expectations of this museum. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. To summarize the collection in three words: death and destruction.

The theme on the first floor was the crucifixion of Jesus Christ with dozens of paintings from the Middle Ages depicting that scene, the moments before of the moments thereafter. Alternated with the occasional other bloody scene from the bible.

The second floor saw some interesting paintings from Rubens and Frans hals, but also plenty of paintings that depicted even more morbid scenes from war to the torment of the Titan Prometheus.

Don't get me wrong, I've been to plenty of classical art museums around the world and I do really appreciate oil paintings. But the I found the collection in this museum to be a bit monogamous and the exhibition a bit depressing. It lacked variation. Interestingly enough, also saw a family with very young kids (about four years old). To be honest, not the collection I would take my young son to.

The basement of the museum was closed, so admission was reduced to €5. But my wife and I left with very mixed feelings.

Not to be missed! One of our favorites of all time!
Jul 2020 • Couples
I have been to Cologne about 5 x earlier-mostly to Christmas Market and never time to visit this museum.

Now we made time in Corona pandemic: had the place nearly to ourselves.

What joy!! All I can say is : don’t miss it! And our neighborhood museums are Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Stedelijk, and Hermitage in AMS! This smaller museum was excellent!!

Unexpected Gem!
Sep 2019
We were in Cologne with an afternoon free, once we saw the Cathedral. I have seen many museums, but this one is so memorable. The collection of realistic medieval painting was fascinating. I will never forget it, and so glad I did not miss it. Yes, the staff was less than personable-but that was not why I was there.

Excellent museum

Very good museum with excellent Rembrandt exhibit. Many of the paintings on all the floors had fantastic explanations of what the artist was trying to achieve and not just a name and title. Truly impressive

Exquisite collection of Medieval art, nice impressionist collection all with well written informative plaques in German and English. Highly recommend the Rembrandt special exhibition as well. We also enjoyed the museum cafe for lunch and would recommend.

Excellent city-centre museum covering medieval & renaissance art
Dec 2019
Smack dab in the middle of the city, this museum is great place to start a day of touring Cologne or taking an afternoon break from the outside. It is not huge so you can spend 1-2 hours here and see a large part of the collection.

Interesting museum with unfriendly and arrogant staff :|
Dec 2019
The Rembrandt exhibition is worth visiting. Interesting works of art as well as good explanations in German and English.

The staff should learn about customercare, especially if you pay 13 Euros pp , you don't like to be treated like a potential thief?! Before going to the museum I checked the allowed size of ladieshandbag (DIN A4). My bag had the right size but I was forced by a very unfriendly female staff member speaking bad German to leave my small bag at the cloak room. She agreed that my bag was the ok size but she!? decided that I couldn't keep it with me "because there were too many people visiting"?!

Be prepared to WAIT a lot : for the ticket, at the cloak room, to acces the temporary Rembrandt exhibition....

Rembrandt show definitely worthwhile
Nov 2019
My wife and I spent a rainy day enjoying the current Rembrandt exhibit and a pleasant lunch inside the museum. The show was excellent, thoughtfully created and yet not overly long. I only regretted that I couldn't spend more time with the other exhibits.
