About
The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial site of German division, located in the middle of the capital. Situated at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse, it extends along 1.4 kilometers of the former border strip. The memorial contains the last piece of Berlin Wall with the preserved grounds behind it and is thus able to convey an impression of how the border fortifications developed until the end of the 1980s. The events that took place here together with the preserved historical remnants and traces of border obstacles on display help to make the history of Germany's division comprehensible to visitors. The memorial is part of the Berlin Wall Foundation, which also includes the Marienfelde Refugee Center Museum, the central site dedicated to the history of flight and emigration in divided Germany. MOBILE TOURGUIDE Visitors to the Berlin Wall Memorial who have a smartphone or a tablet computer with internet access at their disposal have the opportunity to select an individual tour of the memorial grounds for themselves on the memorial's mobile website berliner-mauer.mobi.

- Tomas AbiChelmsford, United Kingdom21 contributionsBreathtaking journeyAbsolutely perfect place where you gain lots of imagination about the life behind the wall. It’s beautiful journey and there is just information centre with the view. We spent there couple hours over the afternoon and I have to say it was a peak of my trip in Berlin.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 March 2023
- CWGermany124 contributionsOne of the Most Historical Places in BerlinA small part of what is left of the Berlin wall and the skeleton of the wall can be found here at The Berlin Wall Memorial. A dense and emotionally heavy history of Germany lies at the once separated East and West of Germany, when overnight the GDR forcefully built a wall. Separating the country and its people for 28 years, from 1961-1989. The preservation of the wall portrays the stories and encounters of survivors and those who failed at escaping from the East to the West of Germany. A must see and need to visit location when in Berlin, it is one of the many main histories of Berlin and Germany which formed the country it is today. The location is open air and fully accessible to the public. There are no entry fees nor reservations required. Drop by at any time of the night or day whenever you have the time to.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2023
- JohnWoodend, New Zealand7 contributionsHugely interesting - learnt a lotFantastic preservation of part of the Berlin wall. The grounds are worth visiting and walking through - well laid out display stations. Don't miss the museum itself across the road - the displays are very comprehensive and there is a good video of the fall of the wall on the top floor. The viewing platform of the preserved section of the 2 walls and no-mans land is also worth spending time at.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 April 2023

Berlin was the hot spot with the US and USSR only blocks away from each other. The museum give a lot of detail on the building of the wall in 1961 by the Soviets and East Germans. It is a must see if you come to BerlinVisited May 2023Written 22 May 2023
- StephenSwanscombe, United Kingdom13 contributionsA Monument to the Cold WarThe Berlin Wall Memorial German is a powerful reminder of the Cold War and the history of the divided city of Berlin. Located at the former border between East and West Germany, the memorial is made up of a concrete structure that is both a memorial to those who died during the Cold War and a reminder of the oppressive border that once divided the city. The memorial is made up of a series of concrete walls, watchtowers, and guard posts, as well as a museum and a memorial site. The museum provides a detailed look at the history of the Berlin Wall and the events leading up to its construction and fall. The memorial site includes a memorial book, a memorial plaque, and a memorial garden. Visitors can also take part in a guided tour of the memorial, which includes an audio-visual presentation of the history of the Berlin Wall and its impact on the lives of those who lived in East and West Germany. The Berlin Wall Memorial German is a must-see for anyone interested in learning more about the Cold War and the history of the divided city.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2023
- Claudia CMonza, Italy66 contributionsDon’t miss it!If you have any interest in history do not miss this site, it is the one place in Berlin which gives you a sense of what life was like when the wall was up. There is a very informative museum across the street (and a small cafe if you need a pit stop) I found it phenomenally interesting and quite emotional! In the museum you can see videos and hear recordings of people who lived through that era and their experiences.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2023

- 00Shawn00Swindon, United Kingdom278 contributionsGreat visitWe walked to the memorial from our hotel near Brandenburg gate. It was about an hours walk but really nice, with plenty of nice coffee shops and bakeries on the way so we managed to have a nice coffee and a potter around. The memorial itself it really worth it, and we very nearly didn’t go. It turned out to be one of the better parts of our visit, and we actually preferred it to the East Side gallery. It’s quite easy to miss parts so make sure you keep going right up past the mural of Conrad Schumann and eventually the memorial ends in a little alley way between some houses. If you stop off first at the visitor centre you can grab a load of leaflets with each one focussing on a specific part of the Berlin way e.g the history, the aftermath etc and that is really useful. There is a lot of information boards so just take your time and read everything, it is so worth it! After the first section you walk by a large metal wall. At the end, before you cross the road, go through the little alley and you end in what looks like it may be a car park?? However, you can then look through the gaps in the original concrete wall and see the preserved section between the east and west side walls with the tower, the original light posts and junction boxes etc to see what it would have looked like. Quite a lot of people walked by that so make sure you stop off. It’s the but at the end of the original cemetery where the large tower is still standing.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 July 2023
- ClayRudersdorf, Germany4 contributionsA walk through historyVisiting the memorial of the Berlin Wall was an eye-opening experience. The graffiti, iron bars, and divided city all served as a reminder of the city's past. Checkpoint Charlie was a particularly poignant reminder of the physical and ideological divisions of the city. It was a powerful experience to witness the history of the city firsthand.Visited July 2023Written 23 July 2023
- IsabelWeston, Florida7 contributionsHistoricalThe place itself was really historical and it’s amazing and saddening to learn the history of the Berlin Wall. My only problem was the fact that it was a bit not taken care of. It wasn’t littered or anything like that, but there wasn’t much to see. The only reason we learned most about the Wall was because of another tour we went on. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great place to visit, just don’t expect too much.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 July 2023

You have to see this memorial. It's a thought provoking guide through an important moment of history. From the wall itself to the watchtowers and the tiny plaques commemorating escape plots. It's incredible.

A very sober, very interesting and well presented piece of modern history. We learned a lot about something that was part of early life. It is worth visiting!

It was recommended by my friend to visit this part of Berlin to see Berlin Wall.
It was fragments of the wall left with strong everlasting message to appreciate peace, and unity especially at these time.
It was drizzling and cold yet totally worth it.

I found this very moving. It represents history I grew up with, news reports of young East Germans pointlessly killed by their own people. Looking at the memorial to these people and seeing their faces was moving but so too the realisation that a wall was constructed to separate two communities of the same city! How stupid we can be.

I saw the hop on hop off bus near Alexander Platz, I didn't take it because it's so easy to to visit the city with the pubblic buses, cheaper , so you can stay all the time you need

I would like to know if the underground museum and memorial would be ok for a person to visit who has claustrophobia. Something I suffer from. I can't travel on the London underground for this reason!

The memorial is above ground. You could probably walk to it from Alexander platz or get a tram.

Και τα 5 μουσεία του museum island είναι must και ειδικά το pergamon και το Altes.
