This place gives amazing views of the city. We walked through on our own and did not do one of the guided tours. If you are somebody who wants to learn about the history it would probably be best 2 experience this with a guide....More
After you get done with your coke at the restaurant at the top because you're out of breath, as I sat there guzzling my coke, I wondered what madman would build such an imposing fortress, or what idiot would try and attack it. I toured...More
Worth the walk from the bottom of the hill for those that are able. Good view from the south side of the fortress; and great view of the Main River Valley and in particular Wurzburg from the east side of the fortress. We took a...More
Visited Würzburg years ago and the inside of the Festung was not open to the public. They have since opened and excellent museum. The fortress is a massive but interesting structure. You get and excellent view of Würzburg and the Main River from the ramparts...More

When we visited the fortress we walked through the side streets. Yes, there are steps and it is a little challenging but if you take your time it is certainly worth the visit. Reasonably priced as well for entry. We visited in December and the fortress was closed but the museum was open. Think from memory it is closed from Oct - Mar but you need to confirm this. Not sure how your cruise will take you there but it didn't take that long to walk at an easy pace..
