Overview
More
The museum exhibits in 2 buildings and on 6 floors Germany`s most important collection of legal history. The highlight of this museum is its exploration into the unusual law enforcement techniques used by local rulers in medieval and early modern times, such as torture instruments, shame punishments or instruments to execute corporal punishments or death penalties. Numerous displays, original graphics by famous masters as Dürer, Grien and Rembrandt as well as original documents, seals and law books from the 13th - 19 th centuries show the development of law in past centuries. The homes and walls of Rothenburg show visitors the mileau of times gone by without telling much about the lawful circumstances of its residents. Arising questions? This was a stop chosen by my girlfriend as a gift for me (putting up with the touristy side of Germany). It was an excellent choice. The collection and items are numerous and thorough. So, so many pictures taken at this museum. It was worth...More

This museum will take time to visit. Only about 25% of the info in english but that will still take at least 1.5 hours to see. It is amazing the amount or artifacts preserved and information provided. There are lots of stairs to climb in...More

A very thorough look into the macabre ways of torture of the past with instruments and detailed instructions! You could easily spend a few hours there. Lots of kids there with parents explaining things to them. Interesting and informative displays of shaming and the laws...More

It was on the gruesome side- don’t take small children if you don’t want to be explaining what torture devices and witches are lol! I was with two college age sons and my husband- lots of reading involved- many documents and most explanations were in...More

Interesting, very hot inside in May, and a bit disturbing - kind of graphic. Not on my list of favorites, but it does deliver exactly what it advertises.

We heard this was one of the best "torture" museums in Europe and decided it was worth a visit. It definitely has a ton of old torture instruments, weapons, etc., but it also has a lot of information about how laws and the legal system...More

When my family and I read about this museum, we thought it would be all about torture and its instruments. Yes, there are pillories and chains, but also a good amount of informations about law, tradition, lores, social expectations and different forms of punishment. Also,...More
