All the ruins are down by the river. The exposed Roman structure and brick work are amazing and it is amazing that Regensburg survived the WW2 as well as it did. Not ony the portal, but many other small areas in buildings are exposed and...More

Remain of the east side Roman wall built in the times of Marcus Aurelius around 200 AD. What a piece of history - almost 2 millenia old and standing there in the middle of the old town just over from the Danube. Truly an experience!

Regensburg is a beautiful city with lots of history. Always amazed to visit a site of Roman ruins, so far out in the frontier of Germanic!

To appreciate how layered the history of Europe actually is. This Roman gate, now incorporated into the fabric of a renaissance building is a reminder just how many layers there are to peel away. It's close to the river and well worth seeking out to...More

Built in Marcus Aerilius time, it's amazing that it is still in use today by shops. Sometimes you can see the ancient through the medieval. Beyond the gate and across the courtyard is a modern day underground parking garage under St Peter's. Here you can...More

These very visible remains of Roman Empire occupation graphically emphasize both the age and strategic importance of Regensburg. This was an early stop on our guided walking tour of the old town area and well worth it from a historical perspective.

Coming from the USA we don't see things that are really old and it it amazing something built over 2,000 years ago can still be here. It is wonderful how they have incorporated it into the modern city and still kept a piece of history....More

Interesting piece of Regensburg history skillfully integrated into the city architecture. There is a Sign (in German) that explains the history and dates of use.

This is the remains of a gate, which was part of a Roman fort built around 2000 years ago. This is the only Roman gate left, which is located in the North of the Alps.
