While you can walk to old town from the Munich HBF, the S-bahn will get you there much quicker; get off at Marienplatz, which is the center of old town Munich. There are a number of beautiful and impressive churches just steps away from Marienplatz. The Deutsches Museum is nearby, as is the Munich Stadtmuseum. Lunch at the Ratskeller, also at Marienplatz, is recommended. Another place worth seeing and is just a few steps from Marienplatz is the Munich Residenz. Also, the Viktualienmarkt is adjacent to Marienplatz. If you had more than a day, I'd recommend the Neue Pinakothek, the Alte Pinakothek, and the Lenbachhaus, all excellent art museums. I visit Munich annually and I always find something new to do and see.
