Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A must to do if you have the time and energy. Rode the cable car to the top and then walked down to the lowest cable car. It is a steep, loose rocks, some uphill hike. If you start from the top it is 75% downhill (you have to take a lot of baby steps to ensure you don't slip) and 25% uphill. Takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. The view is unbelieveable. Pictures can only describe how beautiful if is. It probably would be a little easier to start at the lowest point and walk up but it can take good leg strength to do it. If you are not in a hurry that's even better. Dress appropriately and bring water. The restraunant at the very top was very good.

Alpspitz, is a 1575 m mountain with a two stage chairlift, near Nesselwang, Our Konig's card entitled us to one free chairlift up and down per day. It was a lovely, sunny summer's day so it was very crowded at the top level, though there are some nice walking paths. Great views and naturally air conditioned on a hot day.

Feeling like a good walk, we elected to hike up, and then ride the cable car down. Completed in about 6 hours and it was a wonderful experience... Beautiful ascent into the snowline. Rewarding experience and highlight of holiday.

I really like the skiing here. High enough for consistent good snow. Nearly as high as the Zugspitze but not as busy and often quieter than the rest of the Garmisch Classic area.

Only from up high can you appreciate the beauty of the Alps. There is no better place then on top of the Zugspitze. The view of the mountains and valleys become a God painted picture for your appreciation.

Its very attractive mountain. Its a special place, its Bavaria, its symbol of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Alpspitze.
Take the Alpspitze cable car from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, then enjoy the view. You have to do it. Really nice sightseeing. Perfect for walking and trekking.

We drove to Garmisch only to find that the final 4 miles to the parking lot where you get the gondola would take one hour and seventeen minutes to drive to due to the huge number of cars lined up to get in. Also, as someone coming from Colorado where (particularly in Telluride) the gondola rides are free, it was a shock to find that it was 40 Euro apiece for a round trip to the top and back. I'm sure it's stunning at the top but I'll never know because I had no desire to be up there with mobs of people.

We chose this over the Zugspitze as we wanted to hike more and it was recommended. We took the short gondola up, hiked to the top and then took the gondola down. The hike was steep in places, but we did it without problems (w/ sticks) and the views were great. 2 miles and 1000 ft elevation. The restaurant at the top had excellent Apple Strudel.

Once at the top, how long do people typically spend there? In summer what's the best time of the day to go?

First of all, go on a clear day, if you can. We went in September and there was snow at the top. We spent about 30-40 minutes there. I would recommend a minimum of 15 minutes, if it is windy, up to 1 hour, if the weather is nice.

Would it be dangerous to hike down in Birkenstocks or simple leather boots - I have forgotten my walking boots...

Birkenstocks would be a no-go. If you are only hiking the section between the Kreuzeck and the Hochalmbahn or from the Hochalmbahn to the Alpspitze with the Garmisch Klassik Ticket, leather boots could be ok, but I would make sure that they have good tread and no raised heel. The general rule of thumb in these parts is anything ending below the ankle for footwear is risky (chance of injury high).

I recently heard (Nov 2016) that climbing to the top of the Alpsitze is now restricted due to the number of hikers. Is this true? I've enjoyed three climbs to the top and hope that one can still make the climb to the very top.

When I was there in August there weren't any explicit restrictions in that regard. I didn't specifically ask about them either though. That being said, there was no one there to monitor whether you climbed to the upper reaches, beyond the hiking path and gondola.
Currently your main restriction would be weather conditions. Are you an experienced winter mountaineer? If not, the upper portions of Alpspitz would be an extremely dangerous place to play. I only put this in here because TripAdvisor has a large number of inexperienced outdoorspeople who undertake outings they probably shouldn't. If that's not you, no offense intended.

Can you drive up to the viewing station?

I do not believe there is any type of road heading to the Alpspitze viewing station. The Alpspitzebahn or hiking trails get you there. One of my favorite webcams is up there. If you have not checked them out, google: garmisch gapa livecams. I check them out all of the time. Some new ones recently been added too.

Is this a hike and if so, what would the temperatures be in late May?
It's a very long up hill hike, about four hours up and about 3.5 down. All nature all the way so be prepared. You can Google average temperatures in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to help guide you.

The best way is to get on the train from Garmisch.Visit the information centre in Garmisch to get the best deals. They have different passes for sale and you can choose the ones that best suits your needs.
