About
A popular day trip from Munich or Salzburg, The Eagle’s Nest atop Mount Kehlstein was formerly used by Hitler for state and government meetings during Second World War. To get there, you’ll have to take a special bus up to Kehlstein, before entering via a tunnel and then elevator. Learn about the history at the sunroom, and check out the famous Italian marble fireplace. Complete your visit with a meal at the restaurant; get a table on the outdoor terrace for views of Burchestgaden and the lake. The Eagle’s Nest is only open from May through October, and may close during inclement weather. – Tripadvisor

This is worth the trip for the historical significance, but there isn't much there to see - the building has been almost entirely turned into a restaurant, with only a small exhibition. We walked up from Obersalzburg, the signs said 4 hours, but it took us (experienced hikers) approx 2hr 30. It's a steady uphill climb (approx 800m elevation) on forest tracks and tarmac tracks. You arrive at the bus stop and can then join the queue to get the elevator up for free or walk another 20 minutes to the top. The bus from Obersalzburg is approx. 30 euros (adult return) at the time of writing, which wasn't clear to us from the website, pre-booking is advised in busy periods.
The main thing to be aware of is that the documentation centre next to Obersalzburg car park is a definite must to visit beforehand - it's an exhibition about Hitler's time in Berchtesgaden and includes going down into his underground bunker. This was under-advertised and we only stumbled upon it by chance!

Absolutely recommend visiting, especially if you enjoy signtseeing & hiking. Leave 2-3 hours for this. Tip: Eagle's nest closes quite early each day, by 4pm, we went there right after exploring Lake Konigssee. Bus ride from the tickets centre takes some time, we got discounts from our Berchtesgaden air BNB stay, 10% off.

If you're up for it, once you get off the bus, you can hike up to the top of the eagle's nest, or if you're not feeling it, you can take the lift like the majority do. Got some wines & beers at the top restaurant, totally worth the exprience in my opinion.

There is a great deal of confusion as to what the Eagle’s Nest is, and it’s to do with its situation and the lack of any English translations about the place when you get off the bus at the first transit stop.
It is very easy to be confused about what you are paying for and what you are visiting.

To be clear - The Eagle’s nest really refers to the restaurant at the top of the mountain, and unless of course you are wishing to eat out, is a complete WASTE of time and money (€59.20, for 2 at time of writing) - for a trip by bus to a restaurant!

The REAL attraction of the place is the building called “DOKUMENTATION Obersalzburg”, which is about 50 yds further down the hill from the bus stop, and which is a gem of a place!

The building contains the underground bunkers used by the Nazis, and there is a wealth of information, photographs, historical documents and an audio.visual tour, detailing the growth of the place, the Nazi party and Hitler’s occupation of the place - all for the princely sum of €6 for 2 people.
Well worth the visit-don’t get confused by the “name” of the place!

I want to caveat this review by stating we ended up at Eagle's Nest when it was shrouded in cloud so we did not get the 'awesome views' experience. That said I still feel what should have been a trip to a place of historical significance felt like a bus trip to a mountain cafe. While I fully 'get' why it should not be glorified, there is so little here to justify the expense; very limited photo exhibition and no guide or film about the construction and what happened here. You are a captive audience to the cafe built in confines of the Eagle's Nest which is fine but there is so little to see and do aside from eating and drinking pretty average fare.

Incredible history to see and experience in Berchtesgaden, Germany including the Eagles Nest. I highly recommend you go on a day with clear skies. We were lucky and hit the mountain first thing and were able to see the absolutely stunning views of the Alps and Berchtesgaden.
The clouds did come in and when they do, you won’t be able to see the views.

Only buses that are part of the Eagles Nest are allowed up the very steep one lane road. Once there I highly suggest skipping looking at the views and head into the tunnel to catch the elevator to the top ( you can walk up if you wish but it’s steep). Once up top you are greeted with breathtaking views of the valley below ( reminded me of the sound of music movie) a view unlike any I have ever seen. Hike up the trail that goes above the building to more beautiful views. I think this is a must see for anyone that loves the alps and beautiful mountain ranges.

Unfortunately there is a dark past to this place but it was kept because of the engineering marvel that it was, and because it was only used a few times by Hitler ( it was rumored he was scared of heights and did not like going up here). Today that dark past is long gone and only the beauty of this place is what remains, as well as a reminder to things we should never forget so hopefully we never repeat it again.

Took a trip here for the day. You have to drive from the village below on some very tight and bendy roads. Parking is free once you get to the beginning of the tour. Walk to the ticket office by the buses and they will give you a times ticket to get to the eagles nest. You cannot drive up there yourself. They proudly announce that the buses are electric and drivers take you to the car park below the house itself. After departing the bus you walk through the tunnel and take the lift to the top. I think the mirrors in the lift are original and there's used to be velvet seating on the inside of the lift.

At the top you can walk round what is left of the house and see the magnificent views of the valley. For the hiking enthusiasts you can walk to the top but it is a steep hike. There is a display about the building and outside you can walk up to a monument which overlooks the house itself. Inside, there is a famous fireplace donated by Mussolini and what is the restaurant used to be the famous conference room. There is a crossed pine ceiling but I don't know if this is original as Hitler used to like his pine. There are not many objects to view and Hitler did not often stay here as he preferred his own house down the road. However, he did visit here and on a clear day the views from the top are magnificent. After looking round you can get the lift back to the car park and drive back to the town. On a clear day, it is a wonderful place to visit although it is not cheap.

Great views but that's about it. Was expecting a bit more of the history when you come here but the sad Nazi historical aspect of this place has been purposely left out. For that side of the historical aspect then you visit the Documentation Centre where the buses leave in Obersalzberg. To visit Eagles Nest you park in Obersalzberg and board the shuttle bus for a 20 minute ride to a small parking area. You must book tickets early as this place is very very busy. We caught the first buses of the day and already the crowds were huge. When the bus drops you off you then walk through a wide tunnel carved out of the mountain then board a lift that takes you up to Eagles Nest. There is a restaurant and plenty of viewing areas to see the spectacular 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains. To be honest we were there for only about 20 minutes. We didn't eat or drink anything, and decided to board the next bus back down the mountain. Worth it for the views but not much else.

The journey up was itself interesting, especially the views from the narrow bus ascending the winding road. The views from the top were impressive in the direction that was not covered by clouds, though not as impressive as we saw later in the day driving the high alpine road at Grossglockner. The building on top is now entirely a restaurant, at least as far as tourists can tell, so you can't see historical artifacts there (as others have commented–I read about the history on Wikipedia instead). We tried taking the hiking trail at the top, but like most people, soon gave up (in our case where it became log steps on a steep downhill across the rocks), though we regularly take moderately challenging hikes.

Living history. Glad Greman authorities did ot level this place. Yes it was a high place of the evil of Nazism...but that is now history. Worth viewing. Suggest going before midday in July. 2 hours is plenty. You can sit and have a meal inside or snal and drink outside. The views were just outstanding as we had blue skies. Transport works like clockwork...suggest you be 10 mins early when they say so. Our 838 bust from Berchtesgaden was 25 mins late. Overall you ca not come to Berchtesgaden and not visit the Eagles Nest. We tried a private English Tour...week b4 was a dumb idea...book in advance. You don't need a tour...just read up online.

While visiting Salzburg, went to Berchtesgaden which include a trip to the Eagle's Nest. Unfortunately, it was raining very heavy with fog during the visit. Since it was raining, it was not crowded, so I just walked up and got the bus ticket and got on the bus, no waiting. Got to the top, but could not see anything at all, just too foggy and cloudy. I could only look at the panoramic photo guide which would show the views on a clear day. I ended up having lunch in the restaurant, it was ok with quick service. On the way back, again not crowded, just hopped on the bus and off we went. Since rain was in the forecast for next 2 days, I was kind of out of luck for a good weather day.
