- Sam3314Derby, United Kingdom2,087 contributionsMagnificent churchThe climb up to Montmartre is steep so recommended to take the funicular. To visit the church simply join the queue in the square outside. It generally moves fairly quickly, there is a quick bag check and then you are in. Do dress respectfully e.g. women cover their shoulders, men shouldn't wear hats. The church is magnificent and you can take your time once inside to admire the different altars and the decoration.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- doctorfoxtrotTaguig City, Philippines13,153 contributionsAlways Crowded Even in Off Peak HoursSo many tourists and pilgrims stay here. An uphill climb entails but a funicular ride saves the day. People peddling souvenirs, street artist showing their talent and a huge crowd enjoying the scenery and admiring the views and the beautiful basilica. Inside the church however, it must be quiet with lots of the visitors praying. It is open to the public 24/7 and meditation are continuous. Look out for the relics and the huge Jesus mosaic inside. And watch out for pickpockets.Visited October 2023Travelled on businessWritten 10 October 2023
- Lee SFayetteville, Arkansas259 contributionsFun afternoon with some artVery crowded and lots of guys trying to sell you bracelets, scam! Long line to get in the church, even on a Monday in October. View is ok, it's of south Paris, so you don't see any of the main attractions in the vista like you do from the Tower or the Arc. However, it's worth going to visit the nearby "artist square" and the amazing cafe's. We did enjoy the accordion player with his cat :)Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023
- John KPerth, Australia331 contributionsLong fast moving lines - but worth the wait !Stunning basilica always crowded with tourists and the faithful - but really is worth the wait in line to enter. Superb views of Paris from outside as a bonus. Just a beautiful and visually breathtaking basilica.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023

- Connector7059307 contributionsA must see!Whether you’re religious or not, Sacre Coeur is beautiful inside and out. The outside has like a terrace where people just hang out. Cool vibes. Not uncommon for other activities to be outside of the church like a wine or art. festivalVisited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 October 2023
- publiussullaSeattle, Washington291 contributionsBeautiful Church with great views and LOTS of tourists!!!This is one of those amazing places ya have to see when you visit Paris. So be prepared for the crowds when you get there! We opted to hike the stairs up instead of the funicular, there was a line, and we made it! There is no fee to get in and you can take pics with no flash and being mindful this is a church still in use today, there was a service when we went in. The crowds are heavy & pushy! It took 15 mins in line to get in and about 20 mins to walk around and do the whole visit. The views from the steps are incredible!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- Norm the NomadAustralia1,245 contributionsWorth the trip. Very good.Travelled further afield, to the hilltop district of Montmarte (former artist village); alighting at the Abbesses metro - one of the Artdeco metro’s in Paris - known for its 285 step spiral staircase…. and now known to us! Another series of steps to the hilltop, Sacre-Coeur Basilica (1875). With local worshippers and tourists, we explored. Very good indeed.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- Rob RTredegar, United Kingdom2,631 contributionsBeautiful building and great panoramic views of ParisDefinitely a must-do in Paris fantastic location and a truly iconic Parisian building. Easy to get to from the metro and you can use the funicular railway if you don't want to walk the steps. Only downside plenty of hawkers there and some are very pushy.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 November 2023
- PhelpsSydney, Australia2 contributionsA must-see for travelers! The breathtaking view of Paris from the steps of the basilica is something that will stay with you forever. The crypt is an interesting place to explore and the organ concerts are a great way to enjoy the music of the basilica. The architect Joseph-Hippolyte Le Bas did a fantastic job with the design of the basilica and it is definitely worth a visit!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 December 2023

Located at the top of Montmartre, the view over Paris is overwhelming. The entry queues can get quite long but the security check goes quickly and the inside of Basilica is definitely worth it. The colourful fresco on the iside of the dome was my personal highlight and to me is one of the most beautiful I‘ve seen.

I was very impressed by this magnificent basilica. It was on my “must visit list” for Paris and I was not disappointed. They had people queue up in front to not have too many people in the building, but the queue moved pretty quickly and therefore was no bother. Inside I enjoyed the artwork and the wonderful interior very much. I would always come back.

This place was highly recommended to visit in Paris
After climbing a staircase to get to the top of the hill, or go by cable car if you prefer, the church building is magnificent. Inside, is peaceful, lovely to walk round, small candle offerings are €2.
On this occasion, all the English information leaflets had all gone, proving it to be a very popular tourist sight. I didn’t go up to the panoramic dome, but I did visit the crypt.
Which has pictures, film and scripture depicting the life of Jesus.
Although unable to read the French language the place was extremely peaceful and beautifully laid out. Took a little video of it.
I had a look for reviews on the dome, and found warnings of African men selling bracelets and pickpockets.
I am glad of these warnings.
As I walked down the steps towards the street, these men were around and tried to engage conversation (where are you from or Madam? Etc)
I kept my hands in my pockets, kept my head down, and said No, as blunt as I can, and I’m not talking to you.
This seems to work.
A little scary but reading the previous reviews were incredibly helpful.

No entrance fee to enter this beautiful church, although a fee is charged for the dome and crypt, neither of which was open when we visited.
Unlike my last visit when we climbed up the steps, we were much wiser this trip and used the funicular to take us to the top and did the walk down. In the heart of Montmarte, the Basilica is surely a big draw card. The interior is stunning, the views over Paris amazing and the area exudes vibrancy and beauty.

Build during the end of the 18th century and consecrated in 1919, this Cathedral is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Paris. The Cathedral is on top of the highest point and the view of the city from the top is amazing. There is a tram like lift that takes you to the top for a fee or otherwise you will need to trod up the numerous steps. The Cathedral is marvelous, the altar and the paintings are beautiful.

The paintings on the ceiling are amazing - one needs time to stand or sit and really look at them as there is so much detail. It's very touristy inside, in that there is a shop and places to buy a coin with the image of the church - but fortunately it was not too crowded as we went up early evening. The stairs to the top are fairly steep and you need to be relatively mobile to climb them, but if taken slowly and stopping to admire the views and the people along the way, it's not too bad. Otherwise, there are buses that you can catch.

It's good to go early if you're planning to visit Sacre-Coeur. There are throngs of tourists and it can be a bit difficult to move around if you have kids using strollers. We weren't able to enter in but managed to take some lovely snaps of the cathedral's exterior and of the beautiful view of the city of Paris.
You can walk down the steps towards Montmare and there's a lovely carousel at the bottom that you can ride on as well as a little playground for small kids. Lovely place for sight-seeing and photos!

This is just an amazing Basilica on the hill in the North part of Paris. Take the metro to the Anvers stop, a short walk and some steps or funicular ride gets you there. If you have a metro pass, the funicular is free. The Basilica is free to enter, but the dome (300 steps and tight stairs) will cost you €6,00. The exterior is stunning. There are several ways to walk up to the Basilica and all are great views. Don't forget to turn around once you get to the top for amazing views of the city! The interior has an interesting design with the dome actually in the front instead of over the alter. There are also amazing statues and stained glass. The alter is also very nice and decorated. The mosaics they have inside are also breathtaking and worth a second look. Definitely worth a visit!

The crowds touring Sacre-Coeur (no charge) were enormous compared to when I visited 10 years ago. I can only imagine it's in part due to Notre Dame being closed for longtime renovations. But the cathedral is beautiful, and being set on the highest point in all of Paris, the views of the city are stunning. People congregate on the stairwells just to take it all in. Although ti was very crowded, the line into the cathedral moved quite well, and taxi service was readily available. One disappointment was that the very few restaurants nearby were closed (presumably due to the Dec. holidays), so having a lunch in walking distance while in the area wasn't an option.

The Sacre-Coeur has some of the best views of Paris. But to get the full effect you have to follow some signs down below ground level to a little basement area that is the entrance to a world of pain, but rewards you with amazing, fantastic views.
You'll have to pay something like 8 euros for the privilege of blowing out your legs on 890 stairs or something that you'll need to climb to get to the observation area of the dome. These are narrow, sometimes spiral, sometimes on the roof, stone stairs with not many places to rest. There are nice little signs along the way with encouraging messages like "only 600 billion more steps to go!" I'll emphasize this is a single person staircase so there is no turning back on a crowded day. Even if you're fit it is quite a workout and it will put some wear and tear on leg muscles you'll need for exploring the hundred other places in Paris. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Your reward will be absolutely spectacular 360 views of the city. This is your only reward so don't go on a rainy or limited visibility day. 5 out of 5 for tricky entrances and grueling climb. Nice work in torturing tourists and making them pay for it too, France.

Hi we are travelling to Paris in August. How do we get from gare du nord to sacré-cœur?
Written 9 June 2022
So exciting! there are a couple of options for you.
1. You could walk. Sacre Coeur is not too far from Gare du Nord (maybe a 25 minute walk). However, it is all uphill. Also, I wouldn't recommend doing this walk after sundown, as the Gare du Nord area is not the best.
2. Take metro 4 from Gare du Nord to Chateau Rouge. From Chateau Rouge, its only about a 10 minute walk to Sacre Coeur.
3. Walk out of Gare du Nord to find the metro 2 line at the stop called Barbes Rochechouart. Take that line one stop to Anvers, then walk up the hill to Sacre Coeur.
Enjoy the trip! Make sure to bring lots of water to Montmartre because there are so many stairs!!

We were there at Christmas and it was cold outside. The Christmas markets are not to be missed. They can be found throughout Paris. You can find anything and everything! I bought gifts, artwork, holiday ornaments, clothes. All locally sourced. If you are traveling during the warmer months, artisans will be plentiful throughout the city!

How do you reach the cable car and how much does it cost? I’m traveling with my elderly parents.
Written 27 June 2019
Take the metro to Blanche. This will bring you out right by the famous Moulin Rouge. Form here you can catch a “road train” up to Sacre Coeur for a few Euros (about €7 per person one way) or you can get a return if your parents need to, but it is an easy walk back down
It’s a lovely trip up with English commentary, and so easy to get to and from. We have difficulty walking too far and we have just returned ourselves from Paris and discovered this by accident.
