We cycled over this bridge on our Bordeaux Bike Experience tour. It was worth doing because you get a good view of the Garonne river. It's also an impressive feat of engineering with the central section of the bridge platform able to be raised in twelve minutes to let cruise ships pass. However they close the bridge for two hours per elevation for 'security' reasons! If you happen to be travelling by car, beware as this happens quite often during the season...

This bridge has to be seen in action to be believed. Check out the Bordeaux Tourist website for the schedule of when the bridge is to rise. The whole central section of the bridge rises on hydraulic lifts that are operated from the top of one of the four towers. Spectacular at night with the lights of the ships below and the multitude of city lights reflected in the river!

Yes, Le Pont Jacques Chaban is an architectural feat. But I believe that it’s only worth it if you’re visiting la Cité du vin which is nearby... otherwise, not sure I would go all out to see it... so many other things to see in Bordeaux.

This Italian designed bridge is modern, sleek and seems to fit-in despite being built in concrete, glass and steel, rather than the stone used in all the main buildings. The massive towers hold the cables used to raise the bridge to allow cruise ships in and out of the port - but be warned - if you are driving, when the bridge raises traffic is diverted or stuck in a queue for up to two hours!

I was fortunate enough to get to see the bridge lift to accomodate a cruise ship coming in, hence the 5 stars. Otherwise, it's just a bridge.

Rather than just being a standard opening bridge, the whole road is elevated up the four towers whenever a large boat comes into Bordeaux (sadly not very often) as fun to see.

The 'Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas, opened in 2013, is quite a contrast to Bordeaux' old 'Pont de Pierre' from 1822. Both have their aesthetical value, but they also show the development in engineering over this period. In its name the new bridge honours a resistance fighter (nom de guerre: Chaban), former prime minister and long time mayor of Bordeaux.

Further downstream than the 'Pont de Pierre' the new bridge is a so-called 'lift bridge', since its central span can be lifted vertically for about 50m, when a tall ship is passing through. This is quite a spectacle, but it does not happen too often, so one has to be lucky. I did not see here, but four months later I had an opportunity to see such an action at the Hisingsbron lift bridge in Gothenburg.

At the 'Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas' the central, moveable span is 117m, thus the longest in France, beating the Pont Gustave Flaubert over the Seine at Rouen for exactly one meter. The new bridge at Bordeaux is open not only for motor vehicles, but also for pedestrians and cyclists on a separate lane. The main eye-catcher are the four 77m high steel pylons, on which the central deck gets moved up. For the work done here, Egis, the French company in charge of the engineering at this bridge, was awarded several prizes.

We were eager to see the famous Chaban Delmas bridge over the River Garonne (2013) and were rather disappointed. The lift-bridge may be an exceptional technical feat but, looking at it from Quai de Bacalan on a late afternoon, we mainly saw four very high and slender pylons sticking out of the landscape. Judging by pictures the bridge looks much better when seen from the water, when it is illuminated at night, or on the rare occasions the central span is lifted to allow ships to pass. We hope to see this on our next trip to Bordeaux.

Close to Cité de Vin, this landmark is part of new Bordeaux and fits perfectly in the landscape. It's simplicity, yet gracious lines are work is art and quality architecture.

As you walk along the shore of the Garonne River in Bordeaux, you may be lucky enough to see the vertical lift bridge either go up or come back down. It is amazing that it can lift high enough for a large cruise ship to go under. Fun to see on your stroll, or on your way to Cite de Vin.
