About
Not to be confused with its more famous namesake in Paris, this 11th century church is beautiful in its own right, with its elaborately carved facades and detailing.

This most beautiful church in the heart of Bordeaux is one of many buildings that adorn this lovely city and still manages to inspire the visitor with a special aura of history, architecture, and culture. the magnificent Gothic hall, the decorated columns, and maybe one of the most impressive wooden pulpits I have seen in any church, and may God be my witness, have seen hundreds of them. On a hot sunny day on which we visited, the church offered the sense of cool tranquility for body and soul, that one can just crave at such a moment. Even for a totally secular person like me, this church filled me with awe.

We were looking for this church on a Saturday to see waht time their weekend Masses were. As luck would have it, we were there a few minutes after Noon and foudn that they ahad a Mass 1t 12:15PM so we were able to attend. The church is beautiful and is very understated on a side lane that may be difficult to find but it is there quite close in the Grand Theatre section, just across from the tram stop. A hidden jewel.

Notre Dame Church is a beautiful, baroque style church, built in the 17th century. We happened to be passing by, while walking around the streets of the city and went inside. It is quite elaborately decorated and contains lovely paintings and other artworks. It is worth taking the time to stop by and have a look.

Well, first of all, this has become our church since our move to Bordeaux. The Monseigner and other priests are quite nice, the services are wonderful. As a tourist, this Eglise is not to be missed or the wonderful art within its walls. Part of the Cours Malby area, developed by the Dominican Priest hundred of years ago, the churn's alter and art is fantastic. Well lit, and very nice to visit. Make this a part of any church crawl one would do in Bordeaux.

As we visited Cour Mably – a remnant of a now gone Dominican monastery - we took the opportunity to have a look at Notre Dame church, the only other surviving part of the monastery. Its surprising Baroque façade is very ornamented but beautiful, turning the intimate Place du Chapelet into a must-see square in Bordeaux. In contrast to the exuberance of the exterior, the bright all-white interior seems restrained, but it is well worth seeing. There are many striking elements like the gold and black wrought iron gates, the red marble and wood pulpit, the organ case with its music-playing angels, the marble main altar, the stained glass windows and the many paintings.
When we visited, there were black and red graffiti on the church’s façade but a special cleaning service was already at work to remove them. On a Sunday! On the train back home we read that the graffiti had only been sprayed in the night from Friday to Saturday. If only Brussels could react with the same swiftness to the many graffiti defacing its public and private buildings.

We stopped in to view this church while walking around the old city in Bordeaux. Impressive structure, but not recommended for those with allergies. The mold smell is overpowering.

a very beautiful church, with many art works (both sculptures and paintings)
I would certainly recommend getting inside.

The church is somewhat of a challenge to find. We had the address, but finding what we thought to be the location, the Church gave no clues as to what it was. No street number. No signs on the door or church walls - it blended in with other buildings adjacent to it. No statues, no crosses - no nothing to reveal its identity. We circled the block and came back again to now see the main door had opened and folks were entering, So we stuck our noses in and - lo and behold - it was indeed a church.
We were there for Sunday mass. Having been to Sunday mass in Paris, where the church was only about 20% full, this place proved to be a real surprise. By the time mass started, the place was packed - must have been about 1,000 people. The congregants joined in the responses and sang the songs with gusto. We even had the tune "Amazing Grace" sung - not sure if the words were similar to the English version or not (trying to decipher French words being sung in a cavernous space was far beyond my ability).
The mass was concelebrated by two priests with an assist from what appeared to be a seminarian. And the priests were fortyish in age (mere boys in terms of the average age of the Catholic priest population today).. The priests worked the congregation before mass, stopping to press the flesh and engage the congregants in short conversations. Looks like a really dynamic parish.
I will say that most of the church's paintings were in dire need of a good cleaning.

Staying in Bordeaux and the church is just round the corner. I found it spectacular. It's undergoing restoration so the left side is nicely done and the right in progress.
It's one of those places that gives a feeling of serenity.
Look up and admire the arched roof and the stained glass windows. Not to be missed. It was early evening when we went, with fading light but that added to the atmosphere.
It doesn't take long to look around and is very well worth seeing.

The church is a little hidden, you have to find it. It is worth to visit. Beautiful stained glass windows, and the whole architecture is very nice.
