- Peter JLondon, United Kingdom278 contributionsPleasantly surprised. We would'nt normally go to a site such as this but it was included in our city pass so we thought, what the heck. It was a very pleasant surprise, very well organised, well presented and informative. Building itself is very impressive and easy to get to via the tram. Recommended.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2023
- Gerald A28 contributionsAwesome exhibit / pathetic tastingExhibit was an amazing 5/5 experience with excellent visuals and audio covering all aspects of the wine industry (history, geography, sensory, etc). 3 hours and we maybe listened to half the audios. The wine tasting on the 8th floor has great views but it was perhaps two of the worst wines my wife and i have ever tasted (0/5). What a disappointment! Lost opportunity for the various wine regions feature at the tasting.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 October 2023
- AdyWiltonWilton, United Kingdom164 contributionsA must see/do.A must see/do if you come to Bordeaux, but probably best to do out of season to avoid queues and to be able to really appreciate all of the hands on experiences available. You could easily spend 3-4 hours going through all of the exhibits, although not always in a logical sequence depending on visitor numbers and once you have finished the cafe is good value without rip off pricing. A glass of wine on the 8th floor finishes off a really good value and informative exhibition.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- Alan BAuckland Central, New Zealand186 contributionsWine history in spades - wow!Wow - what a complex and that central cellar display. Easy access and good parking facilities directly opposite. Looks as if the ‘old’ river area is undergoing an update and overhaul. All looks so new and fresh with good roads and new buildings. La Cite de Vins is quite frankly mind blowing - loads of ‘theatre’ displays, videos, and so many interactive displays covering wine growing, making and development over the centuries. Obviously a big draw card for families and others especially on a very wet Saturday! The Cafe on the ground floor was somewhat underwhelming - few staff, and service slow so we opted out of a coffee and something to eat. The ticket price includes a complimentary glass of wine on the 8th where there is a 360 degree view of Bordeaux and environs and the Garonne River which features so importantly in the Bordeaux wine history. Absolute value for money and something well worth visiting.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023
- shulamelMontreal, Canada45 contributionsFun and informative!Beautiful and informative! The interactive exhibits are fun and well done! The only issue is figuring out the technology - smartphone provided to scan sections and listen to information BUT if there are a lot of guests it can be difficult to get the individual displays from the beginning. Better to go when it’s not too crowded and if you want to do the entire exhibit give yourself lots of time!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 November 2023
- WildeOscarDun-le-Palestel, France78 contributionsWow!A great visitor experience. Even the most knowledgeable wine buff will learn something new. Architecturally wonderful – the building is said to represent the swirl of wine in a glass beside the flowing river. Good views over Bordeaux. We visited in December and it was busy. It must be really crowded in the tourist season when advance booking must surely be recommended. We thoroughly enjoyed our morning there and will return.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 January 2024
- SandraDs27Toronto, Canada382 contributionsWhether a wine newbie or connoisseur, this is an excellent must see! This venue is unlike any wine-themed that I have experienced. The architecture and design itself is worth the visit. The self guided tour is informative and brilliantly displayed. Naturally you can stop for a wine tasting experience and the wine shop has an array of excellent wines from around the world. If you are in Bordeaux, it would be criminal NOT to stop here :)Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024
- janetchopeToronto, Canada33 contributionsEngaging, informative exhibitsThis is a treasure! Lots of variety in the exhibits to suit different interests. We really enjoyed the ‘fly-over’ of wine regions across the world as well as the videos from wine makers in different regions explaining the unique factors (geography, climate, wine techniques) contributing to their wines. The complimentary tasting on the top floor gave a wide variety of choices - some quite unique - which was much appreciated. We could easily have spent more time, and would come back again another time if opportunity presents.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 February 2024
- CarrieMadera, California36 contributionsGreat interactive experience - during off seasonHad a great time in the museum today. We went on a Monday during off season and it was not crowded at all. I can’t imagine what it would be like during the peak of summer… I don’t know if even try as I think it would be highly frustrating. Today however, was great. Staff friendly and informative, time to go to all of the exhibitions without crowds - and I learned a lot. Really enjoyed our time!!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 March 2024
- PetersperspectivesLondon, United Kingdom166 contributionsAn interactive museum at its very bestReally enjoyed our time at this modern, interactive museum of wine. Each of the themed areas was informative and entertaining covering a wide range of wine topics. There is a lot to cover if you visit each of the areas so suggest you get there early. Very good value for money.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 March 2024

This museum dedicated to wine is an architectural gem.
Situated about 25 minutes from the centre we got an uber to it as we were stuck for time (cost €12) but it's easily accessible by tram or by renting one of the city bikes.
It is possible to do a whistle stop mini tour in about an hour or so, however it's a little confusing trying to navigate at the beginning and to get used to the headset etc and the museum has loads of info, so I would really recommend allowing about 3 hours or more if you're really into wine!
We pre booked and the ticket costing €21 included a complimentary glass of wine (loads to choose from ) of your choice in the rooftop belvedere bar, which has great views all around Bordeaux

Good use of time on a rainy day but...
Audio guide clunky to use at the beginning. Gets easier. But the staff are much less than helpful, everyone instead chatting or looking at their phones.
Welcome presentation on the big screens includes a nod to China. On their website only 81% of funding is accounted for. And there is a lot of support and participation from that part of the world in the ever-difficult wine industry in France and elsewhere... so that's nice to see.
Many of the displays are somewhat interactive and hold ones interest. But many are stretched way too long and go into hypothetical wine history that is unproven, with only flimsy, circumstantial evidence to back it up.
One display is of a globe where countries and regions are ornamented with pictures of items meant to articulate the contributions and attributes of the area. On the map of the USA are a not to Hollywood and the hamburger. I'm happy to receive the credit where it is due, as there are way more burger shops (of low quality, I may add) and McDonald's outlets in Bordeaux per square meter than anywhere I've ever seen, including my native San Francisco.
The wine tasting at the end is quite limited in variety and each person may only try one. So I'm not sure the 20 euro admission and 6 euro parking fee are justified.

I wish I had believed the negative reviews. This place is a complete tourist trap. They give you a miserable headset (that presses so hard on the head that leaves you with a headache) and an audio guide. You go from one useless stand to another and hold your device near the stand. Technology is so bad that if someone is listening to the description you will tune in exactly where they are at and not from the begining! The information is terribly banal. But that's not the worst thing. This place has no social distancing. People are standing shoulder to shoulder. It's horrid. The creme de la creme is a smelling station where you are to remove the mask and smell various things!!! This is like direct ticket to Coronavirus. Shame on the organisers. They should be legally pursued. At the end you have a miserable half a glass of wine. You'd do much better visiting a chateau where you receive much more information and better wine for a fraction of the price. Avoid, Avoid, Avoid... And please, people of the Cité close down if you can't control the Covid security.

Dear Michatte,
Thank you for visiting, and for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience.
We are sorry that the visit did not meet your expectations.
The scientific committee’s intention in designing La Cité du Vin was to offer content that would be suitable both for experts and amateurs, even beginners. Visitors are free to visit the different spaces in the order they wish, and at their own pace, according to their interests, knowledge about wine, the time they have available, and how busy the space is. We are sorry that the experience was not optimal for you in this area.
Concerning Covid19, visiting conditions at La Cité du Vin have been adapted to take the health context into account and to comply with government recommendations for establishments open to the public :
- the number of visitors admitted to La Cité du Vin at the same time has been reduced considerably. The Permanent Tour can welcome up to 400 people at once (instead of 800 in normal circumstances), in an area of 3,000m², and the Belvedere can welcome 67 (instead of 200).
- La Cité du Vin is equipped with 25 Air Handling Units (AHU) programmed with priority for over 80% new air and fitted with high-performance filters. The filters were changed before the reopening of the site and special care is given to the cleaning of the filters.
- Surfaces and objects that are frequently touched are cleaned several times per day with wipes or cleaning strips containing a surfactant. Touch screens are covered with an anti-bacterial film designed by a French company. Furthermore, each Visit Companion (multi-media device required for the visit) is used only once per day by a single visitor and all devices are cleaned every evening.
We hope that you will have the opportunity to come back to La Cité du Vin and make a new impression,
Wishing you a lovely day,
The team at La Cité du Vin,

Bordeaux is a famous winemaking region and the city of Bordeaux has a museum for it. Very close to a tram stop, it should be easy to access from just about anywhere in the city (unless an anti-vax protest shuts down one of the main lines). With unusual architecture (said to evoke the image of swirling wine in a glass) it is easy to spot. As with most museums during our visit, a sanitary pass is required to get in and you will need to wear a mask inside. The exhibits are broken up into various segments and a self-guide audio player is used, by aiming the audio player at the dots on the display, which then activates the audio player in your specific language. This sounds good on paper but the user interface was a little clumsy and left me wanting. Nonetheless, I did increase my knowledge in some areas. Depending upon the ticket you buy (you want permanent exhibits and Belvedere), you now get to go to the top floor and have a glass of wine. With 12+ choices from around the world, you should be able to find something you like. Take your glass of wine out on the balcony and take in the view. Kids won’t have the attention span, this one is for adults only. Recommended

If you are interested in wine, you get at least two hours of "education" and a glass of wine for your 20euro admission. The rare cement De Bordeaux is very good. It's a short tramride from the city centre, apparently also close to the river taxi stop.

The museum was very interactive and very interesting to understand wine and the history of Bordeaux. Really well laid out. I recommend going in the morning or lunchtime as it was nice and quiet when we went but was getting busy when we left around 2.30pm

The museum is solely films and interactive things which you go around with your monitor. You touch the monitor to the display and are told something about the wine making history or process. I found it extremely dull. After this you go to the 8th floor for a thimble full of half decent wine. The view is ok. £20 for the pleasure too!

As others have said, this seems a bit overpriced but it's quite a nice place to visit as the architecture in interesting and you get great view from the top floor when you do the "tasting".
We pre-booked online (I couldn’t get the pdf tickets to download on my phone but luckily, they email them to you as well). There were no queues when we went in December but it might be worth doing in a busy time We wandered up to the first floor where it says there are tasting rooms and a temporary exhibition - but there didn’t seem to be anything going on so we went up another floor and found the main exhibition. It is very clever electronic gadgetry, with headphones and a thing that pics up the Bluetooth recording form each exhibit (it works most of the time). There are lots of little bits on info and quite a few big screens with rolling videos - which the machine quite often latches onto as you go by. It’s pleasant to wander round and there are some informative bits.
At the end you have to go back down to the ground floor to get in a lift back up to the 8th floor for the tasting. This consists of queuing for a glass of wine of your choice (from a list of about 18 international options) and there is a viewing platform outside where you can see across the city. I don’t what the tasting part is like on a busy day, but we found the outside are quite crowded when we tried to walk round.

There are lots of exhibits with multi-experience of sight, smell, touch, etc. to provide a wide-ranging experience to the appreciation of wine and its history. It was a pity that we did not cater enough time to enjoy the museum at a leisurely pace. We had only about 2 hours and it is estimated that you will need about half a day. The choice of wine at the end of the tour was also interesting, with a wide selection of wine from many European countries to choose from.

We spent over 4 hours here and left just before closing. You are each issued with an av machine which you point at the various circles. This means that despite wearing earphones a number of presentations are playing in French. 2 of our party came away with headaches. One of the problems with the point and click system was that you would come in part way in a presentation unless you were the first person so you waste a fair bit of time waiting to get back to the beginning. There are a lot of experts to listen to as well as a few stories. There is also an area where you get to choose colours and scent. Although there’s a little explorers area I feel that the museum despite its interactiveness isn’t a hit with children. There is too detailed information and if you don’t learn by listening this isn’t for you. The technology glitched on occasion too so this felt frustrating. It would be better to see the process almost like being on a wine tour. Included in the ticket price is a drink and the views are breathtaking.
