Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

After visiting the Smithills Open Farm multiple times in the past, I regret not visiting this gem earlier. Upon spending a lovely morning here with my family and making a visit to the tea room to enjoy some delicious pastries and tea, I would highly recommend anyone to make a visit. The condition of the hall is beautifully preserved and is filled with an array of information about life in the manor centuries ago.
Although the entrance is free, I would highly recommend making a small donation or purchase at the small gift shop to contribute in the preservation of the beautifully maintained manor.

A really interesting house, with great explanations of the history and use of rooms, etc. Helpful people to answer questions - and all for free! Lovely tea rooms too.

Smithills Hall is a really interesting place with parts of it dating from Tudor to Victorian ages. Very good displays, explain the hall through the centuries and make for a fascinating visit (FREE)
There is an excellent cafe called "Bake and Roast" which is separately owned from the hall (which is owned a run by the local authority). The cafe looks out on the park and is set in one of the Victorian rooms. We had afternoon tea which was outstanding. All of it said to be "home made" and it looked and tasted so. We had to book in advance but it was well worth doing. Worth visting Smithills hall just for that.

Beautiful historic building, staff were incredibly helpful, food was delicious. Took us about 3 hours to look round the building, gardens and lunch. A thoroughly enjoyable visit.

What an interesting place. And unbelievably free! And we were lucky to have a young guide to tell us about it. The grounds were being enjoyed by lots of people too. We will return.

Like so many places in Lancashire this beautiful and historic building is seriously under-marketed. It is superb. We had a tour with guide Pat who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable . Just what you want. We weren't rushed and we learned a lot, and we went round on our own afterwards as well because there is so much to take in. The room presentations were great. The house and its history are fascinating. The grounds are lovely too.
Quite typical is that there was no written guide available to purchase afterwards, and none in the pipeline apparently. Considering this house is really of national importance, that is a disgrace. Come on Bolton, pull your finger out! Realise what a tremendous asset you have got........

Unfortunately the day was wet, windy and cold and the hall was closed! Not a great start, however we were able to walk around and admire the ancient architecture. It really is a lovely old guiding and we look forward to returning when the weather is much bette.
