Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was the first time I had climbed the wrekin with my family and the first time since I was young. I did a bit of research and found out the Car park is just off the M54 at junction 7. When you park up there is a machine but it wants you to pay online. We used the machine and paid £4 for 12 hours as we didn’t know how long it would take. You could park in the road just before and I believe that would be free but we didn’t realise. Having parked, we set off. It is quite steep at times and thankfully it was dry as it was still a little slippy especially for young children. The cafe half way up has closed. It would of been great to stop there on the way up or down for a drink. It took about 90 minutes for us to reach the top with us stopping a few times and the views were spectacular. There was a nice sundial at the top showing you in which direction different places were. I do feel this area should be celebrated much more than it is. There was some information about it being used in Roman and Saxon times as a village community but that was it. Overall I would definitely go again but probably not in the winter with little ones.

A good 80-120 minute walk, steeper from the south side than from the car park at the north. Take some food and water, as the cafe is closed and up for sale.
Walking straight back to car park would be easiest option for those who struggle with badly uneven ground.
Being 2 men in our late fifties, we had no problem walking down the steeper south side, and enjoyed walking the undulating path through the woods to the east.
Excellent views of Shropshire and Wales from the top.

Make sure you have strong footwear as it's quite rocky and in the wet weather it's slippy.
It's obviously very hilly.
We found a pay as you park £1.00 per hour. There are no toilets at the car park.

The Wreking in Shropshire has been on my to do list for a long, long time, passing close by on the old A5 and later the M54 I eventually today decided to go.
Packed a few refreshments, suitable clothes and shoes and took the dogs to what I expected to be a well sorted tourist attraction.
Well its nothing of the sort, the local borough council that ironically have Wrekin in their name have done nothing to produce any kind of pleasant experience to visiting the area.
Next to no car parking, the lanes are very poorly signed posted and the hedgerows are full of weeds, nettles and stingers that make walking past in some parts a challenge to not get scratched or stung.
There is ZERO facilties there, nothing, the signage for newcomers is pitiful and yes agreed that the views are spectacular from the top, breath taking in fact, but the lack of any involvement by the local tourist board / council is blantantly obvious, I guess as there is no entrance fee the powers to be are just not interested which is shame on them, so been there done it and never to return.

We had a Sunday morning stroll up the Wrekin, never done it before I thought it was quite steep. Took about an hour. Wear good footwear as it’s very cobbly. Parking was free at the base of the Wrekin. The cafe didn’t open until 11 so by the time we passed on the way down was still only 10:30

I often walk around (or up) the wrekin as it's fairly local.
I really recommend it, you can walk all the way up (past the half way house which used to offer food/drink but unfortunately doesnt at the moment as it's for sale) to the top which takes 30 mins up to an hour or so depending on fitness or you can walk half way up and take a left which walks you around the wrekin and it's about 1-2 hours but much easier (steep parts at times but easily do-able but almost all levels of fitness).
Views from the top are worth it - just keep going!

As someone who’s active but out of shape, I walked the hill with a friend today and I wanted to leave a realistic review as it appears mountain goats have taken over trip advisor 😂 It’s very steep all the way up to the top and not a fast walk. People were very friendly and helped us with directions as they weren’t very clearly sign posted. After the first steep bit there’s an option to turn left or right, go up the right turn even though it looks steeper - save yourself the pain. To the left you’ll eventually hit a vertical forest climb. It’s also very wet and muddy up there so bring good shoes! The cafe is also now apparently closed for the foreseeable future according to a sign on the gate. When you get to the top, DO NOT walk down the other side, you’ll have to go down the vertical bank mentioned previously and it took us half an hour only to put us out on the opposite side of the Wrekin to the car park 😂 Go back the way you came and save the pain. It’s a lovely view from the top though and everyone you see is incredibly friendly and motivating. But please don’t do what we did and go into this thinking it’s a nice gentle novice walk because it really isn’t! It really does feel great to finish though and to be able you say you managed to climb it as someone who’s out of shape!

Tough walk up, if travelling up the south end, would recommend taking it slow. Very much worth it however, as the views are remarkable. Also lots of wildlife we saw 5 dear run across us when heading a field by the Wrekin.

Very nice area - clean. I've read some reviews about dog owners and poo left on the path, but thankfully we didn't come across any discarded bags (or any rubbish, really) and all dogs were either under control or on leads.
If you're not used to steep inclines, wear supportive shoes! I regularly go up the Chase but I'm not much of a hill walker, so had to take a couple of breaks after the chewy bits but the views and the fresh air were a lovely reward.
There were a lot of cars parked on the side of the road, but the park is only £1 an hour. Quite reasonable considering parking costs at similar areas!
I'd go again to get my hill legs back :)

There is a legally enforceable one way system in place for the safety of visitors. it is being abused take care when you park and remember others. the highway is not a car park it is a through route from the surrounding area to Wellington and Back.
There are other places to walk in the area and beyond if the car parks are full.

Are the people in the half way house the people that own the Wrekin/land my nan and Granddad have lived in Wellington all their lives they are both 80 they would love to go up the Wrekin just one more time. Sadly their health isn't very good as they can't walk if I was to offer money to the owner could they take my grandparents up to the top and back down again via car? We would be there obviously is this something I can arrange?

Do you need proper walking shoes for this walk and are there good paths?
Written 12 August 2018
advise decent shoes, very defined path plus small paths to explore

My mum is 88 and has little sight. She hasn't been up wrekin for many years. She would love a revisit. I think that, taking our time, she could walk from half way up to the top.
Is there any time when vehicles are allowed access to give disabled visitors a helping hand?
Written 23 June 2018
Hi sorry we only went up the Wrekin once but the guy at the halfway house was super helpful..maybe you could try there first before taking mum up?..good luck! And I hope you get her up there 😀

are there any cows or sheep grazing on the wrekin? taking my dog up and shes never seen live stock before...
Written 10 January 2018
There shouldn't be - it's mostly woodland.
Depending on your access route, some of the footpaths cross fields where there's a slight chance of livestock, but it's mostly arable farming around the foot, and if you're just walking up any of the main routes you'll have no trouble.

The man who lives half way up drives his car up there, however, there is a farm gate across the track at the bottom and I didn’t notice if it was locked or not
