- FieldFaceSant Andreu de la Barca, Spain637 contributionsBest views in GreenockWas told by a local the best views of Greenock are from Lyle hill and they are good. If you go a bit higher you can get a view that includes port Glasgow. A strange thing up there is the free french navy memorial that's strange for Scotland. The views of battery park are the best bits.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 August 2024

And we also decided to drive to Lyle Hill. What we saw was amazing!! A panoramic view of the river Clyde joining the sea. The weather was absolutely fabulous and the scenery amazing. Definitely not to be missed.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 August 2024
- Julie PBournemouth, United Kingdom43 contributionsThere plenty to do and learn about....We arrived in Greenock on the Cunard Queen Mary 2 to a beautiful sunny day. Instead of going further afield we thought we'd discover the area and history of the town on foot. We met two really knowledgeable guys in the Mall, who were very helpful indeed. The highlight was definitely Lyle Hill, to say, 'stunning views of the Inverclyde' doesn't do it justice, the were amazing definitely take binoculars and a camera (even a phone camera would capture the amazing view). We eventually walked down towards the Esplanade, another good walk along the waterfront with views! Looking forward to our next visit.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 September 2024

Theoretically fine view of Gourock and river. View obscured by constant drizzle. Centre of view is long demolished quay. No boats on river, sky heavily clouded. A depressing experience.

Took the opportunity on a sunny day to walk up to it from Gourock. It's a steep walk past some fabulous properties which took about 20 minutes. You can get up it by car from Greenock or Gourock. It's worth it for the view. Large anchor monument in memory of the French navy at the top. Not the most impressive viewing platform at the top but the views are amazing.

Well if you ever find yourself here you will be amazed. As there are some places famous in the world that would not be as wonderful as Lyle Hill. Its got a 360 degree view that will blow you away and a memorioum to the free French fighters in the 2nd world War. Well kept and could sit all day. And night. Watching the sailing the submarines warships protecting the big nuclear area ARMY plus its got a golf course behind you to use if you want to play. Cheap I would say. It's that and the peace the view. It's a must

Possibly one of the finest views in Scotland if not the world. The lofty aspects afford the visitor a 360 degree view of the whole district but the most amazing one is over Gourock, the West Highlands and the Cowal peninsula. If you visit here I guarantee you will be impressed beyond measure. Also located at the site itself is the Cross of Lorraine monument to the Free French forces in WW2. It also recalls the tragedy of the loss of the French warship the, 'Gloire' which blew up with the loss of all hands nearby in the Clyde. Many poeple can still recall the dreadful sight of poor sailors screaming from red-hot portholes as the struggled in vain to escape. A tragic end for brave men who help save civilisation.

If you are ever in Greenock this is a must visit, this will give you Inverclyde's best vantage point to see Greenock/Gourock and the hills on the other side of the Clyde, you will not be disappointed. Needs to be a clear dry day to get the best views.

Even if you are just visiting for the day on a cruise ship don’t miss a trip up the Lyle Hill to see the views across the Clyde ; worth the walk up via the west end then back down via the battery park and the Esplanade

If you are stopping on a cruise ship, reconsider going into Glasgow and plan on spending your day in Greenock. The Volunteer Committee has done an amazing job of putting together a welcome you won't forget. We took the free tour around the city and found it both beautiful and extremely interesting. The view from Lyle Hill is amazing and the yellow gorse was in bloom when we were there, so everything was extra colourful. And the "wee dram" when we got back to the port was a bonus.

This is only a short distance from my house and it is the most beautiful view in the world. I would hope that when coming off a cruise ship that the passengers take a taxi to this viewpoint. We certainly take all our visitors to it and best of all its free!

How do I get from the cruise ship to Lyle Hill (starting point)?
Written 26 May 2019
It’s a nice walk from the cruise terminal if you are fit enough ; head up Patrick Street ( right turn as come out cruise terminal) and head straight up until Finnart street , turn right And west along Finnart street for a couple of blocks then left and right turn takes you into Newton street and again right and west as the street heads up the Lyle Hill ; you can do a loop by walking down the other side and head back along via the Esplanade ; use google maps to show you the route ; would take 90 plus minutes but it’s s nice walk through the west end with lovely views ; pick up one of the local info leaflets about the houses on the Esplanade which will make the walk back more interesting

Is it a difficult walk. Wel will be arriving on a cruise ship
Written 11 March 2019
Hi, it's not difficult, pavements all the way, depending on your ability 30 - 60 minutes from the dock. A good alternative is the volunteer guides who run trips from the boat round local attractions or us a taxi, but perhaps walk into town rather than use one from the boat as they will be looking for the "bigger" trips going further afield, also there is an open top tour bus usually meeting the cruise ships when they dock. you should get info on the boat about these i think.

Are there any picturesque small towns near Greenock where one could spend a couple of hours walking and shopping for small souvenirs?
Written 27 March 2016
Yes, Gourock is the nearest and good for shopping in original shops in town centre and Cardwell Bay. Bracing walk along the prom.

Is it possible to get to Clyde Muirshiel Park from the cruise port in Greenock on a Sunday via public transportation, or a taxi?
Written 28 January 2016
Sorry it has taken so long to answer. There is a local train station Greenock West where you can take a train one stop down the line to Fort Maltida. But the hike up the hill is exhusting. I would take a taxi there and walk back through the west end of Greenock.

Nous voyagerons en train à partir du port de Greenock. Est-il facile et rapide de se rendre à Lyle Hill à pied, à partir de la station Fort Matilda? Ou y a-t-il un autre transport public nous menant plus directement?
Written 5 March 2015
Yes it is a quick walk from Fort Matilda station, but it is quite difficult as it's a steep incline and can only be achieved by foot (or car)! It is, however worth the effort as it it an excellent vantage point for viewing the picturesque view of the river Clyde and it is the site of the Free French Memorial, which dominates it! Sorry to be so long before answering your question!
