As a folly fanatic I absolutely loved Tollymore. So much curiousity, character and beauty in an estate that deserves to be far more widely known. The bridges and river are a delight and the hermitage is the star of the show.

Some tips:

1. Ask for both the guide as well as the historical leaflet on arrival at the car park pay hut. I got one on entry and the other only when I returned with a query. Note that, confusingly, the maps are oriented differently. The various feature are numbered chronologically rather than in a recommend sequence which would be more helpful. Devise your own route. NB: You may see reference to 'White Fort Cashel' on some maps. Don't bother trying to find it. The site is no more than a mound of stones among the bracken!

2. Allow a good half day to do all the attractions. There are many to see and it's quite a large park.

3. Explore on foot. Yes, there are cycle paths through the estate but they don't provide access to everything.

4. Oddly, the restaurant is closed but there is a snack van parked outside.

5. No guide book is on sale either but you can get the excellent book titled 'Tollymore - the story of an Irish demesne' @ £10 incl P&P from Ulster Architectural Heritage.

6. The park closes at dusk which, on my visit in early August, was 8pm. Admission per car is £5.

What a gem this beautiful place is! A free park (parking ticket machines didn’t work) to go and walk in the nature. Different levels of hiking routes, lots to see in every corner, hundreds of different trees. Anywhere you looked it was like a painting. No rush of people this time of the year either. Will have to return in the spring.

Caravan Park review.

Wonderful and breathtaking views of the forest. The caravan park is set overlooking the monument and mountains above.

The pitches are first come, first served so that oils advise arriving as early as possible. We had a decent pitch facing towards the amenities with fields behind us.

EHU points are shared between pitches and water could be 20-30m away so had to use the water barrel.

Toilets and showers are clean and plenty of them. Chemical disposal point is behind the showers.

Walks are fantastic, children and dog had a brilliant time along the river.

Very reasonably priced. Think an on site restaurant would do extremely well here. We will definitely return, kids have said it is their favourite to date!

Wonderful!! A magical, peaceful nature, you feel like you're entering the Game of Thrones series, or the dark forest of strangers!!! We did the 5.5km red circular route that follows the river and then goes up among the fir trees, how beautiful!!!!
10/10 go there, it's really worth it

The taxi dropped me off at the gates and I walked the long drive-way to the car park and then down the trails. This place is beautiful but HUGE! If you are planning a visit then plan to spend many hours here. There are lots of paths and each of them are so beautiful. If you visit the area then you must visit here.

Had a lovely walk in glorious sunshine this morning on the river walk.
That is until near the end when one of two medium sized black dogs ran barking loudly towards us.Not everyone is comfortable around dogs and the woman with them made it clear she didn't understand this ! The dog took quite a while to be brought under control.
A frightening end to our visit. I warned several people with young children to be wary.
An irresponsible dog owner has made me wary of returning.
She put it on a lead(eventually) and said she didn't have to.
Do dogs require a lead ?

The scenery was beautiful and the sounds of the river hypnotic.Sadly the negative encounter with the dog and its walker marred an otherwise delightful morning.

Hmm … so difficult to give a rating as it depends on what I’m reviewing, so here goes.
Positive - the forest was amazing! Great trails, lovely scenery and clear signage. An absolute delight.
Could be better … we stayed at the Tollymore Camp Site. Great location but, facilities etc were disappointing. We use a lot of sites and were quite surprised. Access to water and electric were good, pitches were good, location was great.
However - the toilets, particularly the gents were poor. There was a lot of flouting of guidelines / rules with respect to noise, loud music, car usage and late driving / ball games near caravans/ motorhomes and this didn’t seem to be policed. There were also so many cars everywhere with most people having at least two and up to 4 cars. The real pinnacle was at the chemical disposal point where there was a heap of 💩 and toilet paper on the grid over the disposal.
Such a shame as we loved the forest park and it was an amazing location. Just needs a bit of TLC and more ‘policing’.

This is a place not to be missed if you’re anywhere near Newcastle / Belfast. The entrance alone is magical with an ancient gatehouse and a wondrous line of Lebanon Cedars along the road. No wonder they used this area as settings for the ‘Game of Thrones’ series on TV. The entrance fee of £5 per car is worth every penny. The three different walks (Black, Red, Yellow) are all well signposted and take you into a world of wonder. Trees, streams, bridges, forests, hideaways - all wonderful. A great day out for adults and children alike. Enjoy!

This place is stunning - the walks along the river are so peaceful and natural. I love how the forest park connects to walkways that take you up into the Mourne mountains themselves. The £5 entry per car is a little expensive, but once you arrive the scenery will blow you away. Such a beautiful place to go!
