Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Basically it's an old library and that's it. You can walk around and examine the many books that are on display but you're not allowed to walk on the top where you probably get the best view of the place. That's reserved for members only. To be honest I only stayed here for 10 mins. It didn't do anything for me at all.

Outstanding building that is open to all to visit but only members can borrow books/cds/music. There is a small serving hatch for coffees/teas and light bites and thousands of books to browse. Staff are knowledgeable and friendl. Well worth a vist to see a bit of history still functioning for its original purpose.

What a lovely building! And lovely staff too - we popped in on a walking
Tour of the city in Feb 24 and everyone was welcoming and helpful. And for a library, there was a really nice background burble of people enjoying each others’ company and the surroundings.

Booked for one of the guided tours. The tour lasts about 1 hour. The guide was very knowledgeable and interesting. The building is beautiful and feels like stepping back in time. Love the seating areas dotted about to sit and read or soak up the atmosphere. Seeing the really old books is something special.
Wasn't aware of the events that happen there so would look out for these in the future.

What a fantastic place! Beautiful building filled with a vast selection of books and music. Staff very welcoming. We had free range to appreciate literature on every possible subject. How lovely to see books for loan by Dickens, Plath, Amis and Priestley (to name but a few) along with modern authors. Huge selection of non fiction too. Anyone who appreciates libraries and literature will be in clover in this one!! I’m very envious of the people of Newcastle, who have access to this excellent facility.

A jewel in Newcastle's crown, sadly it's ambience is often destroyed by the inconsiderate groups who like to gather at the large table to eat food. Their loud voices can be heard all over the library, and sadly the staff do nothing to check them.

We found this place by accident online while searching for things to do in Newcastle. We were intrigued by the fascinating history this establishment has and decided to visit. We were not disappointed. What a beautiful place and if,like myself, you live for books and reading, this is definitely the place for you. Books fill the shelves and to be honest, I would love to return sometime and have another good old browse. There is also a small children's section and a music section. You may have to ask a member of staff if you wish to look at the sheet music, but it is understandable as some of it may be fragile and need careful handling. There are stairs to climb to gain access to the library, but there is a stair lift. The entrance hall is amazing in itself. You can get a cup of coffee or tea here, very reasonably priced and served by a friendly lady who made us feel so welcome. Our time here was very enjoyable and we would definitely return.

I'd read about the "Lit and Phil" in the local Journal newspaper years ago,but until today when we were passing,it had never occurred to me to visit, but am I glad we did. Tens of thousand of books, records, and CD's are housed in a beautifully presented building which harks back to a slower and more genteel time when people had more respect and care for the written word. I shall return, and indeed become a member,if only to enjoy the environment of serendipity which has been created in this literary temple.

Stunning, simply stunning, amazing place a lot better inside than it looks from the outside. If you like Old Buildings, History and of course Books this is simply a must visit place if you find yourself in Newcastle.
