We took our 3 year old Grandson as we had taken his older brother some 9 years previously, unfortunately we got the time wrong! Totally our mistake, but we turned up, showed him around the engine museum and when the train came back in, they arranged a private meeting with Santa in a carriage, gave him chocolates and a juice drink, a mince pie for us both plus a super gift from Santa. They really made a fuss and were so kind. They then arranged for us to take a trip on the train a week later at no extra cost, and although he had already had his gift, Santa gave him a box of chocs so he didn't feel left out. Lots of singing, lovely steam engine ride, an offer of climbing up front to see the fires burning in the engine too. Cannot recommend enough. We went on the Santa a Special today with our daughters and their families. What a lovely couple of hours. We had a carriage to ourselves and Santa visited the carriage with age/sex appropriate presents (details given when booking) and spent some time chatting with the little ones and having photos taken. Then we had sherry and a mince pie with a soft drink and chocolate for the little ones. Entertainment was provided by railway staff who were dressed a bit clown like and everyone was lovely and friendly. Even the car parking was well managed. We’ll certainly be going again next year.…

Exhibits were clearly labelled and explained. Dilhore Park station is a small platform in the middle of nowhere, but only a short walk further along the line to the Colliery (not open every running day, so check with staff before walking off) which is also fascinating to see. The steep track makes for spectacular trains (even though this section is freight only).…

Visited for the autumn steam gala. Not only were stream trains running but there was a great selection of traction engines on display.
