Not your average day out, but after some friends gave it a huge thumbs up last week, I decided to book a trip to Shrewsbury last-minute.

I arrived an hour or so before my tour at 2.30pm so that I could get a bite to eat in the cafeteria, but still had plenty of time to scout out the areas we wouldn't get to eyeball in-depth (the Healthcare office, the Notorious Killers room, the kitted-out examples of occupied cells through the ages, the prison artefacts next to the gift shop, etc). I don't mind reading but heads up that there's a lot of it! I was handed a map and a lanyard after checking in - I appreciated the map, but the signposts around the prison are so plentiful that I didn't need to use it often.

I really do recommend booking onto a guided tour. Some places work as self-guided experiences and that's an option here too, but having an officer take you 'round will add a lot to the experience - some other reviewers have stated a fully self-guided tour is a bit dry and I can get that. It is, after all, a decommissioned prison and not a Merlin attraction (and rightly so!). Dan was an engaging and informative host, his tour had plenty of audience participation, and he put everything into context from the Victorian era to the present day. Even though there's some serious and macabre subjects to be discussed, there was enough levity to keep it all interesting. I've heard fab things about Graham's tour as well so hopefully I'll catch him next time!

Speaking of the staff, everyone was enthusiastic and friendly. I had a great chat with the lady on Reception about the Nights Behind Bars - I'd love to give this a shot later in the year just to say I've spent time in prison!! The site was also very clean and well-kept. The gift shop in Reception has a range of souvenirs - mostly edible, but there's some interesting literature on Shropshire history on offer too. As mentioned earlier in the review I had some food in the on-site restaurant; the ginger cake is homemade and brilliant with a cup of coffee!

The gift shop and restaurant have heating but the rest of the building is rather cold (and some of the tour will be outside) so bundle up for your own comfort. Gloves were a must! There are also narrow metal staircases that you will need to climb and descend during a tour so solid shoes are advisable too. Toilets are single gender-neutral rooms on the ground floor. The prison is very accessible via public transport, you're right next to the railway station and Shrewsbury town, but there's also a public car park opposite the gates.

A really interesting day out and insight into our penal system, and certainly worth a visit if you're in the area.

Parking prices ridiculously expensive,£5.85 (only day rate available)Restaurant (more like a cafe)very expensive,£8 for two hot chocolates!
Wrap up very warm, the prison is freezing and smells awful!
The guided tour was great,Donna was extremely knowledgeable, informative and a few giggles thrown in.The prison has a distinct eerieness about it and your imagination runs wild as to events taken place in there amongst prisoners.
I didn’t want the tour to end,I wanted to know much more and hear more stories of events!Sharon in the gift shop was very friendly and chatty,we talked about her overnight stays that are on offer to sleep in a cell for 12 hours,no heating or lighting and no toilet in the cell so you have to walk down the corridor of the block with a torch only!
As the prison is haunted and ghosts appear,I’m not sure whether I would be brave enough for an overnight stay!

Good afternoon Connector12582572721, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're delighted to see that you have thoroughly enjoyed your Guided Tour with Donna, she certainly is very informative, and is always finding new ways to keep the group engaged. Whilst our prices in the restaurant match the quality of the products, we are sorry to see that you have mistaken the car park across as hours, and we do apologise for that misunderstanding. We will be sure to pass along your feedback to both Sharon and of course Donna! In the future, if you do consider returning for more, we can confirm that the heating is now functioning in many parts of the building. Kind regards, - Jade

We did the Night Behind Bars experience, which was mostly excellent.

The welcome and initial briefing were very well designed and we had plenty of time to set up inour assigned cells for the night.

We had a poor experience in the restaurant, all of the tables were taken and we struggled to find seats. We tried to order drinks to take elsewhere to sit but because one of our group had ordered alcohol, we had to stay in the restaurant area. If we had been told beforehand that only hot & soft drinks could be taken out, we would have changed our order.

We ordered a coffee which was delivered as tea, and when we queried this the young lady was adamant that we had ordered tea and had a "what do you want me to do about it" attitude. She begrudgingly agreed to change it for coffee, and then finally checked the ticket again and offered a muttered apology that it was in fact her error and we had ordered coffee. Our group had to split up to find seats and we heard many stories from our table mates about cold / missing food and incorrectly read tickets. I felt that there were too many people to be served in such a short time and I was glad that we ate before going to the Prison. I think you need either fewer people, more tables and/or more (and friendlier) staff.

From the restaurant we then went on our guided tour with the amazing Michael, which we found excellent. He was both interesting and amusing and we learnt a lot that we didn't know, despite having been to the prison before. I can not fault this part of the experience.

It was good to have the freedom to explore the prison independently after the tour, and the free tea & coffee was very welcome.
The majority of our inmates settled for the night around 01:30 as we did, and save for a few inconsiderately noisy individuals shouting and shining torches into our cells, we got a good few hours rest.

The included breakfast rolls were nice and I was grateful that you had included a vegetarian option.

In short, it was a great experience and I would recommend it - but consider eating at one of the lovely pubs in the town beforehand as once you are in the prison you are at the mercy of the overwhelmed restaurant.

We did the guided tour & were extremely impressed. The guide, Michael, was very knowledgeable & gave us so much information over the hour & a half tour. One of us was a little sceptical as taking on information over that amount of time can be a challenge, but the time flew by & there was no clock watching or bored moments. You can go around by yourself but there’s no way we’d have got as much out of it, even with all the information on boards etc, without the guide.
It was a bit chilly, even inside, so would recommend layering up!
The gift shop was well stocked & there is a cafe, although we didn’t have time to try it.
Can highly recommend.

I was given this Experience Day as a birthday present and went with a friend. Parking was easy and cheap @ £5.85 for 24 hours right outside the gates so that was the first plus point. Was greeted by the staff at the prison gate. Given our cell number and directions to it so that we could drop off our stuff. Bunk style beds, but no ladder for the top one, so I popped the foam mattress on the floor with the piece of sheet that was already on the bunks. We had each brought sleeping bags and we were plenty warm enough when we finally wanted to get some kip. The restaurant is really a cafe with a fairly limited offering (obligatory burger was one option) We just had coffee and cake, but I'm sure what was on offer was fit for purpose. Plenty of loos dotted around the place. No option for a shower in the mornings, so be prepared to have bed hair the following morning. The presentation was good and informative, with a walk through of key places. Free to do what you wanted for as long as you wanted. They had set up giant games like connect 4, jenga, dominoes, and ping pong around the prison. No medium, ouija, or EMF stuff that you seem to get on most ghost nights, but that didn't detract from the enjoyment. In fact it was quite refreshing to be left to your own devices for virtually the whole experience. The staff were on hand to assist/answer/point you in the right direction. Breakfast was simple offerings of Variety style cereals, a toaster if you wanted to toast the breads on offer, coffee/tea/orange/apple. There was porridge, but I felt it looked more suitable for plastering the walls of the older parts of the building. My friend went for the porridge and she confirmed this on her first taste. We both enjoyed the while experience and it was well worth the drive from Bradford.

Good Afternoon X1834OZjaneta Thank you for taking time to leave feedback of your recent visit. It seems that you have done our Night Behind Bars experience where guests come and experience what it is like to spend the night in a prison cell, from what you described it seems you were expecting more of a Paranormal Investigation where the evening is spent actively looking for ghosts and all other things paranormal. These types of events do happen at the prison regularly by other organisations and a quick google search of paranormal investigations at Shrewsbury prison will help. Even though this was different to your expectations we are delighted to hear that you still enjoyed yourselves and we hope that you may consider a return visit for one of our other experiences in the near future. Regards Sharon

We arrived on a beautiful sunny day and soon realised, in prison it's always cold with little exposure to the natural source of vitamin D.
We had a guided tour given by Graham, who was excellent. He bought the reality of prison to life through his stories and experience in a light hearted enjoyable way. We had a lovely afternoon and would highly recommend a visit. Thankfully they let us back out, I can't imagine how grim life is behind bars

I think it was Barry and Sharon who showed us around..(apologies if I got names wrong).
Sharon was very knowledgeable and we all really enjoyed the tour. Would have liked more info on the supposed ghosts.. more back story ..
I think £25 for just over an hours tour was a bit on the pricey side.
It would have been nice if the cafe had been open for refreshments, and felt rushed around the gift shop..
But apart from that small niggle we as a family had an enjoyable couple of hours.

Had a brilliant self guided tour around Shrewsbury prison. We were able to explore all areas, read the information boards and take pictures as we needed. We did not feel rushed and we felt as though we had a good experience. Parking is directly outside and costs about £5 for all day. There is a handy Resturant on site. There are guided tours which we would have chosen but the timings didn’t quite work out for us, we did overhear some tours whilst exploring and it certainly added an extra element so would recommend this option and would choose this if we were to return one day.
Dog friendly, expect for Resturant.

All in all a very insightful experience, great value for money, terrifying in some areas especially the execution and haunted areas.

You could spend all day here exploring we spent half a morning and then wandered into the town for lunch which was lovely.

Great trip to take the kids on and give them a taste of what bad behaviour ends in…

Interesting visit with a warm welcome from the informative and helpful reception team. Great half term activities for the kids and a big thank you to Detective Iva Clue for her entertaining Super Detective Masterclass.

Don’t risk lunch in the Prison Cafe though unless you have lots and lots of time - took an incredible length of time to get our 4 breakfast sandwiches and 2 kids’ lunchboxes (a good 45 minutes!).

And wrap up warm - great to have so much to see and do indoors in terrible weather but it was so cold (including the cafe)!

Good afternoon Excursion55338, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are delighted to hear that you and your family have thoroughly enjoyed both our Detective Masterclass and our Junior Detective experiences, we are certainly looking at bringing this back again in the future! We are sorry to hear that your experience in our Restaurant did not meet your expectations at this time. Due to the significantly higher footfall during half-term week, we were experiencing a higher demand, and there was an increased wait-time during the peak time of the day. In the future, if you do consider returning for more, perhaps we can interest you in checking out our Guided Tours next? Kind regards, - Jade

5 star!!! A special shout out to Donna, our tour guide, who had impeccable knowledge about the prison, local area and general history of prisons etc. She was so patient, professional and smiley / approachable and answered questions with great responses. Her passion really radiated throughout the guide and really engaged our group of learners. The prison itself is in great condition and love the quirkiness of it all and of course the history! Can't wait to return.
