Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Westgate is a particularly well preserved part of the Old Town's walls, built in the twelfth century to defend it from attack by land and added to in the fourteenth century after a brutal French raid from the sea in 1338. The King ordered sea defences to be built to protect his wine cellar on the West Quay. At that time the river lapped at the foot of the walls. Imagine the scene without the sprawl of business development spread out before you on reclaimed land, as you gaze out from the top of the walls and towers. Imagine looking out over the river with no forest of chimneys on the skyline, just trees.
I love exploring Southampton's Old Town. Among the densely packed housing you come across some very well preserved medieval buildings. Beside the Westgate there's the Westgate Hall fish market and wool store, originally built in 1634 in another location, but dismantled and rebuilt here.
I would recommend a Blue Badge Guided Walk of the Old Town with an official Southampton Tourist Guide, which start at the Bargate, describe the history of the walls and buildings and may take you to a medieval tower, cellar and vault not open to the public. Ask at the Tourist Office nearby for days, times and cost of tour.

The Westgate is part of Southampton`s old city walls-much of which is surprisingly well preserved given that so much of the city was blitzed to oblivion in WW2.It is in the area close to Town Quay where much of the medieval city can still be seen as well as a magnificent Tudor mansion house recently restored.

Was surprised that Southampton had such a lot of historic buildings, From the Westgate to a lot of the walls that surrounded the city many years ago. It is nice that you can go up on top of the walls where you get a good view and NO charge. There is information boards on the walls so that you can read all about where you are and what it was built for all that time ago. Worth a look if you are in the town and a break from shopping.

Westgate is an opening in a fairly large section of the Old City Walls of Southampton. It is the western entrance to the old city. It is in excellent condition and gives you a real feel for what the old city looked like in medieval times. Definitely worth seeing if you like historic sites - and it's free!

A somewhat attractive cupola and a gate to the city. Nice to see some old stuff that survived the wartime bombing, which was quite devastating near the harbor. Good for a quick look.

This is a decorative curiosity in the middle of the city, something from another ero. A history here and certainly a little art for photos.

One of the most important historic spots in town. If you are doing a tour, you will surely want to include it.

Location of Westgate, which led to the West Quay and an important access point for 500+ years. The Pilgrim Fathers embarked from the West Quay in 1620. Pretty amazing.

The centre piece is the memorial to the Pilgrim fathers. It tends to be forgotten the the pilgrims set off from Southampton, stopping off in Plymouth for repairs. Linked to this is the chapel area of the city where many pilgrims from Europe originally landed. There are other sites and buildings linked to historic Southampton’s past. It is well worth wandering round and exploring the area.
