Bargate reminds visitors of the historic place of medieval Southampton, one of the most prosperous English cities of its time. At Bargate you glimpse what once was, a walled medieval city, defended by knights in shining armor.

I've lived in Southampton for almost 10 years and I never knew you can get on top of the Bargate. I recently got the chance through a friend and I learned so much about Southampton's history. Definitely worth a visit.

An impressive survivor from the City Walls - of which other elements also survive in various parts of the city. Has become a central feature of city events, such as the Christmas fair. As it is a the southern end of the main shopping area,...More

Impressive relic of medieval southampton. Small museum, though I'm not sure it is still open. Good for selfie backdrops. Normally surrounded by various shop building works. Wish there was more of the old wall about, worth seeking out the rest

Not much left after the second world II, because Southampton was heavily damaged due to its strategic industrial factories located in the city. From time to time you can even get to the gate.

At the center of Southampton downtown, but it's pretty normal wall, historical but normal. A good starting point for visiting though.

The Bargate is part of history, you can walk through it, but it needs some improvements, need to be cleaned regularly as while passing through you can smell urine.

The Bargate is part of the defensive wall system protecting the city from the 1300's. Local historians offer inexpensive tours, and walks around the walls. The city is tearing down some buildings near the wall to expose more of the structures. All very interesting
