- Steve BPoole, United Kingdom4 contributionsHidden gemI’d never heard about this place before but was so pleased with our visit. My 7 year old was fascinated by this well curated collection. The volunteers were extremely knowledgeable and very engaging, encouraging children and adults to interact with certain objects. We’ll definitely be going back!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 December 2023
- Laura-ElliceLondon, United Kingdom41 contributionsInteractive fun for all the family. We have taken our children to the Natural Science Society before and we were completely in shock about how fantastic it was and we had never heard of it even growing up in Bournemouth! So I was so thrilled to see they had extended opening days over the Christmas holidays and took our children again. It hadn't lost its charm. The staff are all incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and approachable. They will talk to children age appropriately about the displays and get things down for them to look at closer. The live insects you can hold and their owners that tell you all about them make it so interactive. The children are just encaptured the whole afternoon. We love coming because it's a nice morning or afternoon activity that we know the children (and us) will absolutely love. My 2 year old loved It as much as my 7 year old. It really is the best hidden jem. It's donations only as entry which also makes it an affordable thing to do, if you're tight for cash and can only make a small donation. I hope the Dorset Natural Science Society lives on forever. We are very glad that you enjoyed your visit. We hope to welcome you back many times in the future.Written 30 January 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 January 2024
- MLRO777London, United Kingdom23 contributionsA hidden gem that’s great for kidsThis is a hidden gem run by fantastic and knowledgable volunteers. Great for all. We have two girls aged 7 and 5 who loved it. We met many other families who were only passing but ended up staying for hours. The girls held a snake. The gem section was nice. A lovely lady told the kids about botany. Highly recommend!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 May 2024

An amazing collection of stuffed and mounted animals, birds and insects, plus geological and dinosaur related items. Even better there were lots of enthusiastic volunteers to explain and discuss everything - although I passed on the opportunity to handle a couple of snakesVisited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 June 2024
- Sarah16 contributionsWorth a visitSuch a gem. Jam packed with stuffed animals and artifacts. Incredibly knowledgeable and helpful staff - really keen to answer questions. Little gift shop with very reasonably priced bits and bobs. Nice little garden area too for a bit of hide and seek afterwards. Amazing few hours, lovely friendly and knowledgeable volunteers in each room!
Interesting and unusual bits and bobs to look round. They had live insects and tarantulas, as an arachnophobic I was initially terrified! After listening to Mark Spencer talk in depth about them I was able to stand next to the tank and was eventually able to hold Rosie the tarantula!! Highly recommended few hours out and free but well worth a donation as I think they all do a fab job! Will be telling friends and family to visit and we will be back

We visited based on my dad’s recommendation as he’d visited before. We went with my parents, husband, 5 and 9 year old children.
The volunteers were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, we all had a lovely and enjoyable visit. We held Rosie the chile red spider and a cockroach as well as stroking a stick insect.
We learnt so much during our visit and would highly recommend it.

A lovely morning at Bournemouth Natural Science Society. All the volunteers were so knowledgeable and friendly! The collections were superb. You really do have to look at everything on all 3 levels to do it full justice. My daughter got to hold a wonderful Chile Rose spider and a very friendly female stick insect.

Knowledgeable staff in each room made this an interactive experience. Lots of questions asked and answered, demos given. Live insects on the day we visited. Garden great for resting or young ones to play in. A very engaging afternoon!

This Victorian villa houses a wonderful collection of material spanning several million years of history from Dinosaurs to an Egyptian mummy. The volunteer guides are enthusiastic and knowledgable. The Society is home to a not so small museum which covers the Natural Sciences (stuffed birds galore), archaeology from the local area and even objects further afield such as the Near East and Egypt. Some of the displays date from the Edwardian area which just adds to the charm.

As far as I understand, there is NO charge for admission to the museum, although donations are very welcome. The museum does regular Tuesday talks & events (there were 85 talks in 2017) and even most of those are free.
