- MichelleManchester, United Kingdom109 contributionsInteresting visit.Called in during term time so wasn't busy. Quite small inside but you can easily spend a couple of hours here. Some really interesting things to see and read about. Quite a few interactive stuff to do as well. The tunnel underneath the sharks was good and the penquins were a delight. Younger kids would really enjoy the place, even kept my teenagers entertained for awhile! At certain times there are talks on and you can watch the staff feeding the fish. There is a gift shop and a snack bar area but that wasn't open. There is a small eating area so I imagine you could take your own food in with you. Price wasn't too expensive for a family of 5.Hello Michelle, Thank you for your review and we are so glad you enjoyed your recent visit and found us really interesting. We do hope to see you again soon.Written 24 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 October 2023
- Angela10 contributionsFun for kids but not necessarily for animal loversIt was lovely to see the sealife so close up - but the tanks felt a little small. I'm not sure that these animals deserve to be in small spaces like this. The children there seemed to be loving it though.Hello there, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I can confirm the health and wellbeing of our animals is our main priority. - Rich HAldershot, United Kingdom131 contributionsStick to sea life and not scares…A shame this attraction feels it needs to conform to the Halloween hype and turn a very good aquarium into a scare fest. We visited during half-term and were really impressed with the place. It was great watching the penguins darting through the water and seeing the large number of sharks cruising the waters. As we drove home, I asked my daughters their thoughts….”I really didn’t like the ghosts in the dark section where the deep sea fish were”. Brilliant. We went to enjoy the sea life and this is where we ended up. I would really love it if popular attractions thought through their stance on Halloween and then they might recognise it’s a distraction rather than a complementary factor. But, then, I guess money dictates decisions…Hello there, We are sad to hear you did not enjoy our Halloween theming and that your daughters weren't keen on the ghosts in the Abyss area. As with most attractions the Oceanarium likes to get into the spirit of things, so when visiting over Halloween or Christmas we will have decorations and additional activities running for families to enjoy. I can confirm these are always promoted on social media and on our website. We are glad to hear that despite this you still enjoyed your visit watching the penguins and sharks. Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate your concerns with the Halloween theming and will take this into consideration ready for next year.Written 3 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 October 2023
- eltris93Worthing, United Kingdom18 contributionsFun couple of hours at the Oceanarium!First time visiting Bournemouth and we decided to use our Tesco Clubcard vouchers to enjoy a couple of hours visiting the Ocenarium. We knew from previous reviews that it wouldn’t be an all day/few hours type destination but we did really enjoy our time whilst there and there was enough to look at. We really loved seeing the penguins and the shark tunnel was also brilliant, our 5 & 7 year old boys were very impressed. We enjoyed the Halloween themed touches too. Overall, would recommend to a family wanting something to do for a couple of hours in Bournemouth, you can always pop to the arcades or beach after as it is very well positioned right by the pier 😌.Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and we are thrilled to hear you and your children were impressed and had a brilliant time seeing our penguins and sharks. We are over the moon to hear you enjoyed the Halloween theming around the aquarium and its wonderful to hear you would recommend us to your family. We do hope to see you again.Written 3 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 October 2023
- Steve P11 contributionsDisappointing visitThe aquarium marine life were good but the environment looked quite tired and in need of refreshing. The catering area by the Penguins was closed which was a missed income opportunity and a number of visitors passed through while we were there disappointed that no refreshments were available. The floor was sprinkled liberally with crisps being crushed underfoot which was also attracting negative comments. Not a great experience given the cost and the fact it is supposed to be a significant attraction for the town.Hello there, Thank you for your review and we are sorry to hear your recent visit was disappointing and that you felt the environment looked tired. I can confirm all areas of the Oceanarium receive regular maintenance and over the past few years we have made refurbishments to our main tank Shark Wreck Reef, our Iguana enclosure, and installed the Observation Station. Further investments are hopefully lined up for the near future too. All enclosures and tanks receive regular improvements and changes to cater to the animals needs. Regarding our kiosks, these catering outlets are seasonal; however I can confirm the Offshore Cafe is open all year round and offers hot food, snacks, and a wide variety of drinks including Starbucks coffee. Visitors can take items purchased from the cafe into the aquarium if they wish. We are sad to hear you feel we are not good value for money. Tickets are valid all day so guests can take advantage of the scheduled talks and enter as many times as they want to in the same day. We are glad to hear that despite your disappointment you felt there is a good selection of marine life. We appreciate your feedback. - MhissyUnited Kingdom54 contributionsLovely small aquarium.Really lovely aquarium at the beach. It was a rainy day visiting Bournemouth and I saw the aquarium and spontaneously went in. It is a small aquarium, but I really enjoyed it. It had a wide range of sea creatures from fish, penguins, a dwarf crocodile to otters. I would go again, it was a lovely time out and they offer student discount. It also has a tunnel to go through and see the sharks, sting rays, turtle and eels.Hello there, Thank you for your feedback and for leaving a 5* review. - Linda PChichester, United Kingdom122 contributionsFantastic ActivityWhen purchasing our entry tickets, the lovely young lady explained where the lift was and the easy route to get around the Oceanarium. My husband is disabled and this was welcomed. The information boards were so worthwhile reading. Understanding the fish, habitat and what they eat is really good to know. Loved the otters and penguins. They certainly showed their character and was fun watching what they got up to. We could have watched for hours Walking through the tunnel with sharks swimming above was a fantastic experience. The very large turtle was very photogenic and quite the "poser" Unfortunately the cafe area upstairs wasn't open, so it was necessary to go downstairs, to Starbucks, to purchase a drink and bring it back up. It was lovely to sit on the balcony and have the rest. The jellyfish were absolutely a joy to watch and to learn about their life cycle It was also sad to learn about the impact us humans have had on the planet and how we can address the situation. It has made us aware that we need to continue to strive to do better. Fantastic days activity, great education, fantastic experience.Hi Linda, Thank you for taking the time to leave a lovely review and we are delighted to hear you had a fin-tastic visit. It is great to hear you found the information boards interesting a took away lots of facts on how our watery world is being impacted. We agree, Carrie the loggerhead turtle is very photogenic and we are delighted to hear you enjoyed seeing the sharks, otters, penguins and jellyfish. We are sorry that you were disappointed the kiosk was closed in Bay View Terrace. This kiosk has seasonal opening times, as it can get cold in this area for visitors. We are glad to hear you took advantage of our main Offshore Cafe during your visit. We do hope to see you again soon and thank you so much for your feedback.Written 19 January 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 January 2024

Worst place i have been for distancing since easing of lockdown V1. Although limited tickets available for each session there is not enough room to distance safely. Narrow route means unable to 'overtake' other people and therefore everyone congregated in cramped spaces. As soon as we entered I wish we hadnt and we hurried our way to the exit when we could.

The attraction itself has potential to be enjoyable, lots of interesting fish and animals to see and I would like to go back in the future.
However I would advise against visiting at the moment with the current arrangements due to Covid19. They are clearly allowing too many people in at once, making it quite an uncomfortable experience. Time slots are available in half hour intervals, but you still have to queue up outside so it’s nearly at the next time slot by the time you get in, and then you just carry on queueing the whole way round. You can’t see things easily because people are queuing in front of them, and you feel you miss things. The queue leads all the way through the attraction leading to the only point where numbers are restricted (for the tunnel) which causes big bottlenecks with no social distancing.
It would work better if they had longer intervals between arrivals, or even no time slots at all rather than forcing people to turn up on mass at set times, and just have a cap on the number of people entering at the door - one group out one group in at the door when at max capacity.

enjoyed seeing the penguin feed and watching the giant turtle swim effortlessly overhead, whilst walking through the tunnel , very disappointed in the Starbucks cafe on site, expensive food, poorly served and a lack lustre menu, £5.50 for a reheated microwave potato with a spoonful of cheese in and dry lettuce is not good value ! only ate here for the offer of a free hot drink for a spend of £4 ... dirty tables, and a lack of staff, no cutlery available either ! would not use again ... friendly girl behind the counter was the only plus point ..

The aquarium is great for younger children. They have made the best of the space they have so impressed on the great views you get for all the fish. This is good value for money as well as most other places charge a lot more. We did have an issue as we paid for 2 adults and 2 children instead of the cheaper family option online as that option was not visible when we booked from the home page. Although this was not resolved at the counter a follow up with the marketing team resolved this and I was impressed with how well they dealt with the issue. They have also taken the action to upgrade their website as the family option is not available on the home page. Overall a great experience.

When my partner said we should look round the aquarium I was so excited (I’m a child when it comes to aquatic life) I thought the price was good for two adults. BUT there was little information regarding the animals we saw. The penguin enclosure was dirty and really smelly so we rushed through. The smaller tanks were really dirty covered in green slime. Everything needed a good clean, more information cards, hand sanitizers were empty. And although we were advised to wear a mask we seemed to be the only ones. We were trying to hold back and give people space but by doing so we were pushed aside, there was no one around to control the amount of people. I would maybe come back to see if my visit was around the time maintenance was due,

Booked online with a time slot which was great we could go straight in without any queuing.
Lots of socially distance markers in place and sanitation stations and a one way system which worked really well.
Great for our toddler who enjoyed seeing all the fish and at good levels for everyone to see and enjoy.
A good couple of hours visit and you can take your time to see everything, the penguins and turtle were a highlight.
We didn’t visit the cafe but like most places you finish with the shop which had lots of things but very pricey.

It's worth visiting at least once if you've never seen it before. Young children love the displays, especially the penguin enclosure. That said, it definitely does not take 2 hours so it is expensive for the limited experience you get from it.
To add, I would advise anyone not to visit on a hot day while we're still required to wear masks. This venue feels like an oven made worse by breathing in your own hot air. Me and my family felt like we were rushing just so we could leave and get some fresh air.

We visited the aquarium using a timed ticket. What they don’t state when purchasing your ticket is that you have to be there for the times entry, but it could take up to half an hour to get in and you queue up outside in rain or sunshine. This was due to ‘social distancing’ as too many people were already in. When I asked apparently this is normal, which suggests they’re allowing too many people in at a time. We had to queue a lot inside and wait for attractions, which is fine, but tough when you have a toddler. Other visitors weren’t following the guidelines and had taken masks off (wearing them under their chin) and jumping the queues and pushing ahead. No one was around to monitor this at all.
The aquarium is fine - better for younger children. Several empty tanks. They give you a 2 hour window - you’d struggle to spend an hour there, even with queuing. It’s quite small. My toddler enjoyed it though!

When the weather didn’t look good for a day on our holiday we decided on visiting Bournemouth Oceanarium. Whilst the collection of fish was good and a nice little gift shop parking anywhere nearby was horrendously expensive and the visit didn’t take long as it’s not very big. There was an odd tiny play area inside but so small it made the area very busy. The toilets were also very small with a cubicle out of order causing queues. The fish were fun but expensive for a small visit.

Bournemouth Oceanarium deserves a loud round of applause for their professionalism, love for the sea creatures and kind welcoming. There are so many unique creatures to admire and learn about/ from in there! Plus, the safety of all visitors was guaranteed by the disinfectant gel placed at relevant points within the Oceanarium and the signs that guided people easily. For us it was a truly emotional visit. We have already decided to come back in such friendly environment (no doubt we will recommend this place to all our friends).

Yes you could probably do it in 90 mins but you may miss out on the otter and penguin feeding times when obviously they are most interested! It’s a great place but not huge so there should be no problem. I hope this helped
