Recently took some friends who were from overseas to Piha. It is not only a great beach for surfing it is a beautiful beach to walk along and the view if you climb Lion rock is fantastic.

Piha Beach is defined by Lion Rock on the left side. It's supposed to look like a reclining male lion who is facing the Tasman Sea. It would be easier for me to spot angels floating in the cloud formations than to see a lion...More

It's quite a long and tortuous road to the beach, especially in a bigish campervan, and the condition of parts of the road is not good, beach is black sand, looked like the walk up the rock in the bay could give good views but...More

Our first time on a black sand beach. Wow it is so wide and many people are surfing, swimming, sunbathing and eating ice cream.

First there is the view as you come down the hill. Stop and take it in. The beach is wide and deep with black sand. There is The Rock that stands over everything. I like just watching and listening to the waves hitting the beach....More

Friendly hosts, quiet and dark nights, and best location. Appreciated the requests for extra blankets, use of beach towels, or local advice.

This is a glorious beach. Sand dunes with black sand. Lion rock is wonderful to see but be warned. The tide here is fierce. There are lifeguards supervising the tiny stretch of water that is safe but be careful of going in the water anywhere...More

This was where we went on our first day in NZ, and a perfect warm-up for the rest of the trip. There's a restaurant on the beach, and a neat hike up Lion's rock. It's kind of steep and narrow, but easy enough for anyone...More
