Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Tried to visit the 2022-07-10 but the museum was closed and according to the neighbour it has been for quite a while. The only things left is some rail in the parking lot, a model of a station and one signal. So sad.

So this review is horrendously late. My girlfriend and I visited this fantastic place (or rather stumbled upon it) during a trip to Canada for a friend's wedding that we extended into a holiday to Nova Scotia. It was a warm September in 2018 (not 2019 but TA will not let me input earlier) and we were out biking the back roads heading back to our B&B when I cam across a sign indicating this railway museum. Now I love my trains and the girlfriend was willing to tolerate a detour. I expected to have fun as I love watching model trains and I was NOT disappointed but the happier occurrence was my girlfriend's taking to the passion, whimsy and knowledge of the owner of this fine passion project of an establishment. They chatted happily away about running a small museum while I gazed at tiny trains passing through meticulously created historical local landscapes. A true joy and I'm sorry it took me so long to say so BUT I've only recently started a TA profile.

Saw tthe brochure for this museum on the Via rail train we took from Montreal to Halifax. Decided to stop since we were coming to Lunenburg to see other attractions. This museum is a labor of love by the owner and chief bottlewasher and his trusty band of volunteers. The cost is $6 for seniors. This museum is being built from the ground up, with a lot of local input and memorabilia. The owner gave us quite a tour and train experience. You get a replica train ticket that is punched just like the old days. He is building a legoland train curcuit. Everything is here from real china from the dining cars to the actual chalkboard time schedule from the train station in town. This is real history and real entertainment.
Would go here again and definitely would recommend this to families, train bufs and anyone wanting to get a picture of life along the south coast of Nove Scotia.

You can't help but go along for a ride with the Conductor here. It's a bit unpolished and quirky but kids are sure to love it and you have to appreciate that this guy is almost single handedly trying to save what relics and memories remain of a once thriving local Railroad.

This is small museum in Lunenburg run with so much passion and love by Duane. He made what would have been a 10 min visit into a much more interactive experience which took longer and really brought the story of the old rail line through Lunenberg to life. We took four kids, all of whom thought it was so much better than they were expecting. Definitely worth a visit!

As Founder of the Boothbay Railway Village, in the State of Maine, I had the pleasure to visit the Halifax & Southwestern Railway Museum in Lunenburg on Canada Day. I was accompanied by our retired Director as well as another who was a long time employee. We were all thrilled with the experience of viewing this wonderful collection of Nova Scotia railroad history which has been put together by Duane Porter over the last quarter century! The Museum caters to people of all ages and there is something for everyone to admire and enjoy. Anyone in this area who is interested in historical transportation, this is a must!

If you have a child who loves trains... definitely bring them here. It's not just a museum - it's an experience.

When you pay your entry fee, you are not just paying an entry fee but need to pick a destination... and get your ticket punched. Next is a short film that clearly demonstrates the heart put into creating and maintaining the museum. And then it's time for the model trains!

The sets have clearly been crafted with care. The winter scene was quite neat. And to keep little ones busy, one must find all the Simpsons characters placed around the sets. For the big kids (adults), the walls are covered with articles describing life working on the railway.

And then it's time to watch the trains demonstrate a day in the life at the station (including adjusting light to match the time of day). A very neat experience.

Duane clearly has a rapport with kids as halfway through the museum, our 6 year old returned to the entrance to tell Duane all about his train set at our house.

And when we worried as it was close to closing (we arrived 30 minutes before closing), Duane simply said...

"Don't worry - this is why we do it. Stay as long as you like".

Simply amazing.

This remarkable museum is just a few minutes drive on the outskirts of Lunenburg. Duane thoroughly entertained and informed us on railroad life on the south coast. His attention to detail and patience in curating the artifacts as well as building the model railroad true to the local topography is amazing. He is very passionate about his work and is shows throghout t his demonstrations. Definitely a fun stop on your tour. We highly recommend this little museum even if you are not a railway buff.
