Stein is located about 10 kilometers southwest of downtown Nuremberg. The company Faber (now Faber-Castell) was established here in 1761 and is a well known brand in writing and drawing products.

The Stein city coat of arms includes two pairs of pencils, showing the importance of the company to the city. Today, it is the 9th generation of the family that runs the business in Stein.

The company offers a number of tours at reasonable prices and as the number of visitors to each tour is limited, it is possible to make an advance reservation. As we were not sure when we would arrive at the Visitor Centre we had not made any reservations. However, we were lucky and thanks to the helpful staff at the Visitor Centre, we were able to attend both the tour “Alte Mine” (the historic factory facilities) and the tour of the castle. Both tours were very interesting and the guides and the rest of the Faber-Castell team very friendly and helpful.

After having attended the tour it is possible to buy Faber-Castell products at a discount, and we would definitely recommend visiting this great company.

Faber Castle, or in German Schloss Faber-Castell is the castle complex located some 6 kilometres southeast from Nuremberg main square, Marktplatz, in nearby suburb town of Stein.
The castle belongs to famous noble family of Faber and it dates back to XIX century. The building is erected in German version of Neo-Renaissance style.
In the castle garden, there is a shop and a little bit further there are Faber-Castell factory, which is one of the most famous pencil manufacturers in the world and dates back to 1761.
When you are in Nuremberg, this is a must see.

Our visit to Faber-Castell was simply wonderful! am an artist and work in an art supply shop so it was a relevant and fascinating tour for me. Our guide, Amelia was so good my family really enjoyed it as well. I booked a private tour of the Castle, Museum and Factory. It was excellent value as we were there for about 5 or 6 hours. Amelia spoke perfect English and was really well informed. The humble pencil has such a history! I will never look at a pencil the same again.

Just a delightful day!

The factory museum is great and definitely worth a visit -- if you manage to get in. I am in the Nuremberg area about 5-6 times a year and it was a challenge to get in: at their website, the museum kept changing the weekend of the month it was open, never coinciding with the times of my visits. I actually waited over a year and a half to find it open! In the museum itself hardly any information is available in English (in 2018, really????), but it's still pretty interesting.
(We did not visit the castle.) The castle grounds are nice too.

We went to visit this castle on a Saturday. Although it wasn't open, we were able to look at it from the outside and that alone was worth it. The gates were open and we were able to just walk in, even into the "courtyard" and look at it. Super cute and fairytale like looking castle, with the main building and another villa close by.
If you want to visit the inside, be sure to check their homepage, as it looks like it's just open once in a while.
Should you be in the area anyways though, for sure go and visit the outside, I don't think you will regret it, that's how pretty it is.

Family in Nuremberg told us the Schloss was open on a weekend we were around. We paid 10 € each for an organised tour of both the Schloss and pencil museum. The tour was only in German, so overly long when you cannot understand what is being said.

The building is a grand example of what the very wealthy could build around 1905. It was an early adopter of electricity so exposed electric light bulbs were used rather than chandeliers. Art deco or art nouveau ceilings etc still survive.

Living quarters are on the second level, entertaining areas above this. (American troops stationed here after WW2 ripped out a wall into the ballroom so they could put a bowling alley through the building).

We enjoyed a picnic lunch in the gardens. Afterwards we had a self guided tour through the lead pencil museum. This has explanations in English of the historic manual ways pencils were made. Examples of all machines as well as pencil lead ingredients gave me an understanding of the process. I enjoyed this tour more than the Schloss.

No photos were allowed to be taken inside the Schloss, but there were no restrictions in the museum

We stopped at the Faber-Castell castle as part of our trip to retrace the steps of my father in WWII and of my father & mother during WWII reconstruction. After the war, this was the Officers' Club for the U.S. Army. Also, the lawyers for the Nuremberg trials stayed here. In early 1951, they visited Nuremberg where my father fought and where he was with the unit that captured the stadium. The city was still in shambles with many people living in the basements of buildings where the tops were uninhabitable. They went to the Officers' Club for dinner, bingo and dancing. She wrote of sitting in front of a nice fireplace in a couple of big easy chairs. The castle was closed when we visited. Quite a shame. I would have loved to see that fireplace. We did walk the grounds. Found a back door that was open and stepped inside to take a few pictures. I think it would be nice to visit but check for hours when it is open. The grounds are quite nice. And there's a cafe there that was open.

Toured the pencil factory, you learn all about the history of lead/graphite and how pencils have been made through the ages.

Pretty interesting, but it does get along. Our group got a nice souvenir at the end and they have a nice gift shop

I love visiting this castle, for the xmas fair or to go and see the factory. The grounds and garden are well taken care of. But the products in the store are highly overpriced.
My daughter wanted a certain box set with water colors. She needed to pay it herself and found it on Amazon for 260€. Since we were in the neighborhood in June, I told her, let's go to the factory store and get it there. I assumed it would be at least a bit cheaper there, since it is directly next to the factory, and there are no middlemen like Amazon needing to earn on the deal as well. Well.... at the store it was costing 395! The exactly same box set! No golden rims, or so. I mean I would have given some money on top, if it would have been a bit more - just because we would have gotten in on location. But THAT much more? No. I asked the lady in the store how can that be and she came with "We have a store with people that need to earn money, Amazon has only shelves." Say what??? Amazon does have shelves, a lot, on multiple locations in Germany, and there are people working as well. But they are also a middle man who needs to earn something on the deal. Which the Faber-Castell-(Outlet-)Store does not. We left and ordered it on Amazon. Came the next day. That's how you drive people to online purchases.

I used their color pencils when I was small so I have been longing to visit their factory. It is a benefit if you know German because the tour is conducted in German. Tour lasted for about 2 hours and we received a 15% off discount card. With that we could enjoy 15% off at the shop.
