It's really quite hot in January in NZ so take a hat, sunnies & sunscreen because the gardens are HUGE with such beautiful gardens you wouldn't want to miss. Great pathways exist for getting around and several grassy areas for picnicking would be a great option for a family outing. There were kids specific play areas and for little kids... More

Located in Manurewa about 30 min car ride from Auckland city, this is a great place to enjoy nature. Both native and exotic trees and plants are in the garden. The rose garden in Summer is the jewel that adds extra beauty to it. You will also see birds around and their nests in the breeding season. Well maintained, clean... More

It's a big and modern garden; no Victorian conservatories or formal beds. Garden design is quite contemporary and quite accessible. The more elaborate gardens are clustered around the visitor center with tree collections and large lawns farther away. It's worth taking a look at the Gondwana tree collections and the palms--there's a few unusual ones. The Gardens do well at... More

Hi David Thanks for such a great review. It is really heartening to see that you saw a lot of the site and especially the New Zealand Threatened Plants Garden. Recreating the habitats has been an interesting way to show people these plants and makes more sense for them to connect if they visit those areas of New Zealand. We... More

No need to book a tour just go and walk this well maintained gardens and enjoy. We especially loved visiting the New Zealand native plant area. One of the few places you can visit without paying a fee.

Stopped off here on our way to Whitianga. Was pleasantly surprised to find it was free entry and enjoyed a wander around the landscaped gardens and a coffee. A great place to stretch legs if travelling on the southern motorway. Would have liked to have spent longer exploring. Obviously a good educational place too.

We enjoyed a couple of hours wandering around the gardens but, possibly due to the time of the year, there wasn't much colour and presentation about the displays. We had lunch in the restaurant which was very good and would pay a return visit.

We arrived late afternoon and walked around the gardens and enjoyed the sculptures. The cafe revived us and we had a short and peaceful visit. The planting is reasonable but perhaps still in early stages of exuberance? It is more like a very lovely public park than a botanical garden as yet.
