Stunning beach, the access to which reminded me of drives back in Ireland - one lane roads & passing places - but with tropical vegetation. The sand really is black & all the more spectacular for it. We felt like we were on set for...More

This wild beach is found at the end of a crazy, skinny winding road. But it's worth the insane drive to visit. On the Monday morning we went, there were 3 surfers and a handful of people walking their dogs ... no one else around...More

Love this beach, it's so wild and untamed. No commercial buildings here to spoil nature. There's a short walk to a waterfall as well. Great place for photography.

Karekare Beach was my favorite black sand beach that we visited in New Zealand. The drive down to the beach is windy but beautiful. The trek through the bush (about 15 minutes) to get to the beach was also lovely. Then you walk up some...More

We parked in the car park then walked the 12 minutes through the bush then through the dunes to be welcomed by a huge black sanded area and loud waves, beautiful! We saw a few people with dogs but the area is so big everyone...More

Stunningly beautiful black sand beach. It took longer to drive than my GPS indicated. No one else was on the beach on a Monday afternoon. Nice picnic areas at parking. At least a 10 minute walk from the parking lot over fairly rough terrain. Do...More

Beautiful black sandy beach where scenes from the 1993 film The Piano were filmed. The beach itself is about a ten minute walk from the carpark. The sea when we were there was quite rough and it was also very windy. But we still had...More

a beautiful beach despite quite a walk from the carpark area to it. The sand was very fine and black colour. The scenery is stunning!

It is difficult to surpass the size and beauty of any of the three major beaches (Bethells, Karekare & Piha) along the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. All three are little more than an hour’s drive west of Auckland, and each is distinctively...More

I persuaded DH to try and find this famous beach about an hour's drive from Auckland .... remembering it from Jane Campion's film, 'The Piano', with Holly Hunter and Harvey Kietel. Our maps of the area were not all that detailed but we headed off...More

Hi Paula, Thanks for your message - the Trek from the lower section of the track down by the bottom carpark is a very nice and easy track. There are no steep uphill climbs in this portion. I imagine she would quite enjoy... More
