About
Father and Son Mark and Ben Van Leewarden had been travelling to the USA from New Zealand for motorcycle trips when they met friends John Devonshire and Wayne Cayton in 2009. With a love for custom motorcycles, riding back roads and old-fashioned fun – the friendship kickstarted. Planet Chopper was created to spread this spirit: the spirit of motorcycle building, riding, and partying.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Ben and the team were beyond helpful in making our motorcycle adventure a reality. The bike ran like a dream, was affordable and pick-up/drop off was tailored to our needs. We would highly recommend Planet Chopper and look forward to renting from them again!

I recently was part of the KIWI CRUSADE which was my first trip to New Zealand. I cannot think of a better way to discover a country, its beauty, its flavours, its people. If your idea of visiting a new country or area, is to flock onto a bus and see " the sights" with a herd of others so that you can tick off all the "things to see" off a list, this trip IS DEFINITELY not for you! If you your idea of seeing a country is seeing it raw, unprotected from a motorcycle, where your "sights" are every corner, every mountain top, every beach, every moment of the day, where your stops are chosen to be local cafes and restaurants which always combine character with taste. To discover a new country this way, and we covered over 2,000 miles it, lead by amazing individuals whom exude proudness for their country and theur country's heritage, whilst providing the coolest motorcycles to do the tour on, amongst a group of like-minded, free thinking, fun, non-pretentious friends which quickly became family... A trip like that is so much more than a "Chopper tour" so much more than learning about a new country and old ways... It becomes one of the trips of a lifetime!

Wow! Where do I begin? This bike trip of both North & South islands of NZ was absolutely amazing! Although I’ve been on many bike tours in Australia as a pillion, I’d never been on a chopper & it didn’t disappoint. Right from the start we were all made to feel welcome by our tour guide/operators & after a few days of short rides getting used to the bikes, we were on our way. Around every corner we were met with spectacular views on both islands. The weather was kind to us except for a day or two, so make sure you have good wet weather gear “just in case” & you definitely don’t need many clothes, even though our luggage was transported by the support vehicle. We learnt a lot about the local people, their customs & their history which was very interesting & informative. Accommodation& restaurants/cafes were all of great standards. We’ve made lots of friends from the US, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland & NZ, who travelled far & wide to do this tour! I couldn’t possibly choose a highlight, as every day presented a new & wonderful surprise. If you only get to travel to one or two countries in the world, make sure that this trip is on the top of your list! I would definitely do it again! 👌...& make sure you have your camera in your hand at all times!

I was privileged enough to be part of the latest Planet Chopper NZ tour. It is difficult to put into words how exceptional this tour was, so let me highlight the positives, from the outset it was incredibly easy to book and any queries I had were answered promptly & efficiently.
The tour itself was incredibly well organized & we were all given the option of riding different bikes which was great.
The tour started in Auckland & covered both the North & South Islands. From the outset the scenery was unbelievably beautiful, & the accommodation & restaurants had been thoughtfully curated to highlight each stop.
Each morning there was a detailed briefing which I found really helpful.
The tour leaders Mark & Ben could not have been more helpful & their combined knowledge of NZ provided a bespoke ‘ behind the scenes ‘ insight into this amazing country.
Although each day provided highlight/s, the singular most outstanding experience was a 4x4 tour of the Buster in Naseby. This is a huge conservation park which was once used by the miners in the 19th Century to dig for gold.
To describe the scenery as breathtaking is an understatement & seeing the tailings & the historic huts is something I will never forget. Our guides on this tour were outstanding, all locals with a plethora of knowledge & humorous anecdotes. This was completely off the beaten track, literally & I learnt that it was only through Mark’s personal contacts that we were able to avail ourselves of this remarkable experience.
This was literally the trip of a lifetime for me & I recommend it highly.
Don’t hesitate, book now.

This was the third trip I have done with these guys, I highly recommend it. The guys are laid back and easy going but also very well organized.
The tours seem to attract really good people and I have made a lot of friends from the trips.
Motorbikes, mates, parties and a lot of laughing, my kind of holiday!

This was by far the best tour of New Zealand! I had previously never been to the South Island so traveling on a motorcycle was the most incredible way to see it all. I am very privileged to have experienced such a trip alongside Ben, Mark and a team of awesome and enthusiastic motorcyclists. Everything was exceptionally organized and dealt with, Ben and Mark really did a great job. Every day was an adventure and every night was a whole lot of fun. I highly recommend this tour to everyone, it is definitely an unforgettable trip of a lifetime :)

wow!!! where to start and how to describe the most amazing tour I've been on. well informed trip with a short meeting each morning talking about the days ride. stopping and staying at local places that as a normal tourist you would not know existed (ex the Pohui hotel/bar, beaches, Naseby, Hayes engineering site, and an old gold mining site). great mix of different bikes made the trip interesting as we usually discussed how they rode and handled each evening over drinks or dinner. over all just a great trip and hope to make it back some day!!!

This trip was simply amazing!! There are so many beautiful places to see and so many activities that it would be hard to list them all! Our tour was a 15 day ride starting in Auckland on the North Island and ending in Dunedin on the South Island. Out tour guides Mark and Ben were wonderful, they would meet with us and tell us about what we would see, the road conditions with tips on riding safety and things to look for each morning before starting out for the day. I was able to see and do things I had never seen or done before. Some favorites being watching a colony of seals (with new pups) in the wild lounging in the sun and playing in the water. My favorite was going to a Maori village and getting to experience their way of life. The weather was great during our tour with the exception of one day we had hard rain and high winds, so definitely be prepared for anything, pack some warm clothing and rain gear. I would also recommend a camera and "Go-Pro" type camera system unless you have a passenger that can take pictures while you ride. This country is breathtakingly gorgeous and you will want pictures and videos of everything! Another suggestion is to learn the lingo so you wont get lost in conversation with the locals! Also study their customs and the Maori culture, they really take pride in their country and work hard to protect their land, wildlife and resources. You will understand once you see how clean and beautiful New Zealand is. The people, the food, accommodations, the experiences, and the camaraderie with this group was something I will never forget. I highly recommend this tour to everyone looking for this type of adventure. Truly the trip of a lifetime! You wont regret booking this trip.
