After a lot of research about different tour options available in New Zealand, we booked the 17 day Kaka tour with Moatrek and we were definitely not disappointed with our choice. We were lucky enough to have Brian as our guide and he was thoughtful, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the history and culture of New Zealand. We toured both the north and south islands,

We visited geothermal pools, soaked in hot pools, saw many waterfalls and glacial lakes with their incredible blue color, stayed at the foot of Mount Cook, took a boat trip on the Milford sound then flew over the sound back to Queenstown (a personal favorite), took a ferry from Wellington to Picton to cross from the north to the south island and had many more adventures - too many to name them all here.

We stayed in very nice hotels, usually with an amazing view, and enjoyed the company of our fellow travelers! It’s a busy 17 days but there are opportunities for down time depending on your choice of any the optional tours Moatrek offers.

New Zealand is a beautiful country and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would definitely recommend Moatrek for a fantastic trip!

New Zealand is a long way from Virginia, so wanted to make the most of the opportunity. This 17 day small group (18 people) tour was perfect for us. We are both 69, and while we did a fair amount of hiking and cave exploring (glowworms!), it wasn't too much for us. MoaTrek really has their act together, and took care of everything. We arrived two days early so we could acclimate and tour the Hobbiton set (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit - fabulous and highly recommended), and MoaTrek set all that up for us. They handled transportation, guides, hotels (very nice) and breakfasts. We toured both the North and South Islands (took the ferry across the Sound from Wellington to Nelson), had up-close vistas of Aoraki/Mt. Cook, waterfalls, blowholes, a plane ride across Fjordland and the many glaciers, several National Parks, beaches, boat rides on oceans and lakes, tours of wineries, farms and sheep ranches. We did optional tours including a city walk in Aukland, glowworm caves in the south, and a Lord of the Rings filming location adventure. Our guide was phenomenal; he was a retired geologist/volcanologist who was intimately familiar with the flora and fauna of his native land and went out of his way to ensure we saw everything we could during our trek. My wife and I enthusiastically recommend both MoaTrek and the Kaka (17 day) tour. We did have 6 in our tour who did the 21 day Kakapo tour and joined our group after the first 4 days (all north island); they highly recommended their portion as well. I don't see how you can go wrong. New Zealand is a friendly, welcoming and beautiful country, and MoaTrek ensures you see as much as you can without wearing you out. There were a couple of long van rides (they use a 20-passenger van with USB seat power, reclining seats and large viewing windows), but our guide filled the time with commentary and frequent stops to see off-the-beaten-path vistas and sites. Total distance travelled was 3,560 miles. All in all we had a wonderful, memorable trip.

Our Moa Trek Kakapo 21-day tour, with the most awesome guide Ali Frew, was unequivocally the best vacation we've ever had! Great itinerary; you get to see so much of both islands. Especially loved the interactions/adventures we got to do with local NZers...such a beautiful experience! But, Ali made the tour even better (pretty hard with all the beauty and activities in NZ). Not only was she the consummate professional but she also established a personal relationship with our whole tour...all 18 of us!! Ali bent over backwards and always ensured every one of us was taken care of and all our questions were answered. She definitely had some challenging situations along the way but you never saw her get rattled...ever! If you do a tour with Moa Trek, ask for Ali as your guide! You will absolutely not go wrong!

In February 2024, I traveled through New Zealand on Moa Trek's 17-day Kaka Tour. The spectacular tour on the North and South Island offers numerous highlights: breathtaking natural wonders (e.g. Waiotapu, observing kiwi birds in a bird sanctuary, helicopter landing on the Franz Josef Glacier, ...), but also exciting history and culture (e.g. visit to a Maori village, ...). The program is very varied and can be adapted to your own wishes through optional activities. A big thank you goes to our excellent driver-guide Ali. Ali was very committed and helpful. Her great enthusiasm for her country was transferred to our group. With her warm and humorous manner, she also quickly managed to weld the small group into a close-knit team. Traveling in a small group was also very pleasant for me as it allowed for personal contact.
The hotels on the tour are very comfortable with very large rooms and are usually within walking distance of the local sights.
For these reasons, I can highly recommend the 17-day Kaka tour. It was gorgeous!

My husband and I took the Kaka 17 - Day tour January 16 - February 5, 2024. Our intrepid guide was Jan Kirkpatrick, a native Kiwi, who did an excellent job of teaching, guiding, driving, and entertaining us. Our group of 16 very interesting people bonded quickly and enjoyed each other's company throughout the tour.
We chose this tour because it focused on both islands extensively. Jan drove our 20-person bus 2,704.83 miles, and additionally we sailed across the Cook Strait, enjoyed several catamaran excursions, an excursion ship on Milford Sound, and an absolutely beautiful flight across the mountains returning to Queenstown. Hiking was a daily event through lush green forests, on dry planes where giant boulders stood from eons past, past active, steaming mud pots, to beautiful beaches, private land and city parks.
Even though there were some excursions that were too challenging for us, we were always in a place where we could share in part of the excursions or choose something else to discover and enjoy. Only Kaiteriteri town was the exception. Jan led the group on a hike from this beach town along the Abel Tasman coastline. The hike was to be 2 hours, but took 4. It was a long wait for us in Kaiteriteri where there were no alternative activities we were interested in. We urge MoaTrek to find an alternative for future travelers to enjoy. The MoaTrek description of activities was a bit understated at times concerning difficulty levels. We recommend more specifics details and a grading system like 1-5 stars concerning the level of difficulty.
This was a trip-of-a-lifetime for us. We saw so much of beautiful NZ and highly recommend it! Again, kudos to MoaTrek and to Jan. Thank you.

Our 21 day Moa Trek tour exceeded all my expectations and more. Everyday was exciting with frequent stops to take in and enjoy the spectacular countryside NZ offers. The beauty of the Moa Trek tour is that it encompasses so much more than just the spectacular, as our visits to farms, vineyards, boat cruises, forest walks, gave us a superb insight into this wonderful country and its people beyond the tourist trail. I cannot praise Super Ali, our guide and expert driver, more highly. Blessed with enormous patience she ensured we all had a memorable 3 weeks, nothing was too much trouble for her from arranging all our various optional activities to retrieving belongings that we had accidentally left behind in error. She quickly became a good friend to all of us with her ready sense of humour and was always prepared to go the extra mile in showing us around. Ali is a superb ambassador for both Moa Trek and her country and it is with thanks to her that I rate my holiday with 5 stars.

Touring New Zealand was a once in a lifetime ambition for us. My wife investigated many option before selecting Moa Trek 17 day Kaka based on the itinerary, favorable reviews and small group concept. Looking back, what a great choice, what a beautiful country and what a great tour guide! I can't imagine a better ambassador for all that New Zealand offers than Jan! Trip highlights included the boat ride and hikes through Abel Tasman park, seeing Mt. Cook & nearby glaciers, our boat tour of Milford Sound & small plane flight over the Southern Alps to Queenstown and seeing the spectacular shore of the Tasman Sea and the pancake rock formations of Punakaiki. We had many fun experiences in lesser know places that only an experienced native New Zealander like Jan would know existed. Jan has a knack for helping a group of complete strangers quickly bond and have fun together. What a great group of people we travelled with. There was one afternoon where part of our group wanted to hike, part wanted some time at a historic tavern and a fellow traveler needed a visit to a medical clinic. All three were in different directions and far apart from each other. Jan, in her dual role as guide and bus driver, seamlessly made all three happen simultaneously. Until the final hour, Jan continued making sure we saw the best New Zealand offers. At the end, she made sure those ending the tour at several Christchurch hotels were checked in and secure before getting the rest of us to the airport, checked in, bags tagged and at our gate for the return trip home before we parted company. This was the best travel adventure we have ever taken!

We had a fantastic trip to New Zealand. It was everything we hoped - largely down to our Kiwi guide Rossco. He knew all the best viewpoints for that exceptional photo and did everything he could to make the trip special. Our favourite trips were to Milford Sound and the helicopter trip to Mount Cook.
