Welcome Rock Trails is a private trail on private land, prior payment and booking is required online before embarking on this journey. Suitable for mountain bikers or hikers with the option of overnighting in one of our back country huts.

This trail is a single track, cross country mountain bike/hiking trail. Hand built on one of NZ's longest historic water races (water races were channels cut across a hillside bringing water from streams to places where gold was mined). We have called this trail ' The Roaring Lion Trail' as it follows the historic Roaring Lion water race.

Welcome Rock Trails prides itself on being a premier private hiking and mountain bike trail that offers historical and ecological guidance. Here you will find a hand built trail located within remote, native, high country farmland that is cloaked in stunning scenery. We are easy to get to and you will find us after a quick one hour drive from Queenstown. At Welcome Rock Trails you will find a truly unique Southern pioneering adventure. A day out of Queenstown with our experienced, local guide will enlighten those with a keen sense of adventure, culture, place and preservation.

You will be transported to the settlement of Garston, met by our experienced, local guide who will enlighten those with a keen sense of adventure, culture, place and preservation. You will be transported to the start of the trail (Historic Ski Hut Nevis Road, Garston). You will then embark on your journey along the 21km hand built single track trail. Once the trail is finished you will be picked up in Garston to return to your destination.

Had a fantastic day's biking out at Welcome Rock. The trail combines some faster flowing bits with a few tight turns and a lot of endless views - good combination of gradients with nothing too steep. The huts and tent look like a great option for an overnight bike or hike trip.

I mountain biked the trail. It is a sensational single trail with plenty to keep you busy on the bike. No boring bits! Throughout the ride you remain elevated with awesome views out over the valley. If you are out for a quick hoon or a gentle pedal in some great country then its a must do. Cheers Katie and... More

So pleased you enjoyed the trail. It is great as you say to either hoon around or spend some time slowly getting around the trail. Thanks so much. More

Really enjoyed my bike on this private trail. Plenty of single track with just enough challenge to make it interesting! I did it by myself and there were only a few others on the trail. The weather was clear but there was a very cold wind in places, so make sure you are dressed appropriately and have warm clothes with... More

Finally getting around to posting a review of our visit in Feb 2017. We wanted something a bit different between Wanaka and Milford sound, and this delivered in spades. We hiked it in clear ( though breezy) weather. The views on the drive up and from then on were fabulous. After our simple pasta dinner, we fired up the tub.... More

Great product, especially if you stay the night. I stayed in the very photogenic Mud Hut and think it was the best out of the options. I found the trails challenging and I enjoyed meeting my limits in privacy (we didn't see another sole for 24hrs, bliss!). Only criticism is that the owners were not very good at replying to... More

I did this mountain bike trip with my husband in late February. We are in our mid to late 50s. I am relatively new to mountain biking. Overall the trails were not too technical. If I thought a corner was too tight, I had plenty of visual warning. The sun was pretty intense the day we road the majority of... More

A year ago we rode this trail and vowed to return and stay overnight in one of the huts. We booked the tiny Slate Hut for Saturday night. We walked the 45 minutes into the hut with our sleeping bags, food and wine and set up the outdoor bath (allow at least an hour to heat) while enjoying drinks and... More

Walked this with my parents for Mum's 60th. Our ancestors mined in Nokomai so was a trip down memory lane. Amazing weather and views. Loved our night in the Mud Hut

Welcome rock is a special place showcasing the beautiful heartland of Central Otago. The walk in to the Mud Hut is a gentle 2-3 hour hike. Allow yourself plenty of time to take in the scenery on both sides of the valley. Great not having to carry in plates, pans, cutlery etc. Cut wood, gas and dish detergent all provided!... More

Welcome Rock Trail is an superb place covered of tussock grass with 360 degrees views of the mountain ranges around. It is the perfect place for some off the beaten track mountain biking and hiking, with even some private affordable accommodation on the mountain. EPIC!
