About
On the pacific coastal side the Whangarei Heads you will find the magnificent 5km long Ocean Beach. The Beach is surf patrolled through out the summer months and is a well known beach for boogie boarding and surfing. The water is crystal clear during the summer months and there a fantastic views from the sand dunes at either end of the beach. There are some great rock pool exploring to be had at low tide at either end of the beach. This has to be one of the most spectacular beaches in NZ. It will take you approx 35 minutes to drive out to this beach from Whangarei and aprox 15 mins from Parua Bay. Highly recommended!!

Lovely classic kiwi beach with lots of space for roaming without bumping into others every step. It also has lifeguards patrolling in summer. The water was lovely and warm and there are interesting rockpools to view at either end. We saw several Oyster Catcher birds finding shellfish in the sand, breaking them open to eat. They let you get quite close to view what they were doing, which was quite special.

There are two parking areas. One is lower down and has toilets and quite a number of parks. The other is higher up and overlooks the beach directly with not many parks.

The only undesirable thing is the crazy drivers you see when driving to/from the beach from Whangarei which takes about 45mins. Well worth the drive though with beautiful harbour beaches to see along the way.

First time I’ve swum in the sea in April. Beautifully warm, great surf for my boogie board, good facilities nearby.

Looks like a nice beach but it was way too cold to even think about going for a swim. I imagine this would be a good surf beach

We set off from Whangarei taking a picnic, water and a flask of coffee. There are no shops or cafes.
Arrived round 11am and headed off on a path through the dunes for a swim. Almost an empty beach and so hot. Good surf and beautiful warm water. Walked back for lunch in the shade of trees on one of several picnic tables. Toilets close by. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

We enjoyed a swim and boogie board. The water was warmish and clear. There was surf lifesavers on patrol. We also walked over the headland to the south to a beautiful wee bay there. Not much shade, take something with you. The toilets are also a little rudimentary.

At the end of one of the roads on the Whangarei Heads, the trip is rewarded with beautiful vistas, white beach sand and surfing. So peaceful and refreshing.

Secluded but too far away, this beach oozes contentment as soon as you arrive. Beautiful beach, rock pools, and delightful sand. Pack a picnic and head to ocean beach for the day, you won't regret it!

Nice freedom camping spots all along the beach with seaside at your doorstep, fresh water streams where you could "top up with water" should you need to. DOC camp at end of beach with clean toilets. A couple of shingle riverbed to cross but seemed to be no problem for cars without 4 wheel drive, maybe a different story if raining heavy! Lovely walk to top of cliffs with beautiful views, go to the lookout.

Fun place to come for a swim or a hike. Safe for the kids with patrolled beach. Rock pools off to the side fun to explore. Nice big hike if you’re feeling up to it.
