About
On the pacific coastal side the Whangarei Heads you will find the magnificent 5km long Ocean Beach. The Beach is surf patrolled through out the summer months and is a well known beach for boogie boarding and surfing. The water is crystal clear during the summer months and there a fantastic views from the sand dunes at either end of the beach. There are some great rock pool exploring to be had at low tide at either end of the beach. This has to be one of the most spectacular beaches in NZ. It will take you approx 35 minutes to drive out to this beach from Whangarei and aprox 15 mins from Parua Bay. Highly recommended!!

Lovely classic kiwi beach with lots of space for roaming without bumping into others every step. It also has lifeguards patrolling in summer. The water was lovely and warm and there are interesting rockpools to view at either end. We saw several Oyster Catcher birds finding shellfish in the sand, breaking them open to eat. They let you get quite close to view what they were doing, which was quite special.
There are two parking areas. One is lower down and has toilets and quite a number of parks. The other is higher up and overlooks the beach directly with not many parks.
The only undesirable thing is the crazy drivers you see when driving to/from the beach from Whangarei which takes about 45mins. Well worth the drive though with beautiful harbour beaches to see along the way.

We set off from Whangarei taking a picnic, water and a flask of coffee. There are no shops or cafes.
Arrived round 11am and headed off on a path through the dunes for a swim. Almost an empty beach and so hot. Good surf and beautiful warm water. Walked back for lunch in the shade of trees on one of several picnic tables. Toilets close by. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

I have been visiting Ocean Beach for over 50 years now and seen it develop from a dirt track access to a well developed (with toilet amemities), tarsealed tourist destination which allows freedom camping.....BUT, if freedom camping, CLEAN UPAFTER YOURSELF, and take your detritous away with you otherwise I will track-down your home address (world-wide) and post to you a lovely little Christmas present!

The drive to it seemed long and of the main road but there is a car park van a great place for the camper van to have lunch. The beach is massive clean and fairly flat but with a few dunes. There is a public toilet and freedom camping is allowed.

Besides having beautiful beach there are connecting walks along the top of the Mountains you will need to allow up to 6 hours to make it up to the top along the ridge and back down to Oceans beach there are also others walks too that take you to other beaches not to kid friendly unless they are like mine and both under 14 at the time and didn't mind it we took snacks and drinks their are no shops but toilet facilities

Surfer's Delight if the wind is from the right direction. Perfect for sunset walks. For serious hikers the start of the Bread Head Trail to Smugglers Bay and to the North a terrific walk over the headland and along Kauri Mountain Beach.
The best news, generally you will have the place to yourself except for a few locals.
Swim between the lifesavers flags as dangerous rips.
Children love playing in the high dunes at the North end of the beach. At the south end climb up to the top of the headland to see broad sea vistas out to the Hen and Chicks.

We found Ocean Beach at the very end of the Scenic Whangarei Heads Road. The cruise out from town takes about 45 mins and is a beautiful drive that follows the inner harbour with its clear bays almost all the way out to the beach. Theres a carpark and toilets available and a viewing platform overlooking the beach as well. If you turn right once on the beach you can walk over the small hill to the south and onto another small beach. Turn left and walk over the sand dune down the left of the beach and you get to the next stretch of the beach which is about 6 kms long and if there's 4 people there it would be a busy day! The beach is surf patrolled during summer. Awesome spot!!
