Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Having read about the Picnic Point Track, we went looking for it. We found it, clearly marked near the beach car park at Papatowai, The bush track entry is clearly signposted and can be found a few metres up the road form the carpark and public toilets. The track winds its way through native bush to a rocky outcrop on the beach. When you get to the beach you can either return the way you came, or, if the tide is out, turn left and walk along the beach until you reach the car park where you started.

You can access Papatowai beach via the small 15 minute Picnic Point walk from the end of Cross St, (parking available). The big sweeping sandy beach from Florence Hill lookout is Tautuku Bay.

Some people mixed up this place with Florence Hill which is close each other but not the same. Papatowai Beach is approx. 2-3km east of Florence Hill at the mouth of Tahakopa River. From the main road take detour off road for short distance through local roads and then you will be at the beach. Take a stroll along the river side on sandy white brownish beach, relax and nice walk. Enjoy the view of the river mouth and sea waves at the distances, and the road bridge at the hill side. There is some tracks, short, medium and long routes along the river side, the choices are yours.

We visited Papatowai Beach on a rugged afternoon but that didn't takeaway from this fantastic place. Wild, rugged and a great place to visit.

This is a wide beach, when we were there huge waves were hidding the ciast line due to a strong gale. The wind came from the direction opposite to that of the waves. It made for extra steep waves with a thunderous surf, wonderful to see and hear.

Didn’t go to the beach but visible from Florence hill lookout. Stunning immaculate crescent beach. Not sure if it is accessible for surfers or sunbathers.

We camped at the DOC camp at Papatowai Beach great place to stay right on the inlet which is a good walk out to the beach. Lovely native bush and bird life along the inlet and the beach is long and beautiful hardly anyone there. Do visit.

There are two good walks here if you want to stretch your legs during a Catlins road trip. Turn off the highway at Alexandra Street and drive down to the beach access via Mirren and Cross Streets, park here and walk back to the start of the Picnic Point walk for a walk through the forest before coming out at the beach and walking back to the carpark. You can add to this with an out and back walk to Kings Rock, mostly across private land with sweeping ocean views. The beach at Kings Rock is mostly pebbles, with occasional bits of papa shell, bones and seaweed washed ashore.
The other walk is the Old Coach Road which starts on the north side of the Tahakopa River bridge, about 40 minutes return, plus time on the more extensive beach on the northern side of the estuary. There is an alternate return which I didn't do, via the Old Possumers Track.

We visited at the end of a long day exploring the Catlins. It was a lovely peaceful evening for a walk on a expansive flat beach with some interesting rocky areas at the far end.

When the tide is in the light on the water is just beautiful.
Great walks where you go right around to the surf beach and then onto a track and down a short road back to the beach carpark. Fantastic place for kids to play. Lots of tracks in area, Whistling Frog restaurant and Cathedral cave plus Gypsy caravan close by.
