Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The 14 day South Island Autumn Tour was an exceptional experience and our guide and driver Ian, provided professional, caring and attentive assistance throughout. The attention to detail and just the right amount of commentary gave us a wonderful holiday. Great value, in a beautiful part of the country.

Hello Larnach01, firstly let me apologise for our tardy response in acknowledging your review. This isn't our usual style and we have noted this so it doesn't happen again. On the brighter side thank you for taking the time to pen such a glowing review. We are humbled and rapt that you enjoyed the tour and it provided you a wonderful holiday. That's what it's all about! Booking and paying was easy, could pay via paypal which was great. Kae was very helpful. Our tour guide Grant was friendly, informative and professional and made the day an enjoyable one. We had some longish drives that Grant filled in with interesting information about NZ which made the time fly by. The bus was waiting for us when we got off our ship and we were back in plenty of time before departure. Hobbiton was beautiful and I think you'd like it even if you are not a fan. At Rotorua the geyser performed for us and Grant made every effort to make sure the timing was right so we could see it. The cultural display was great, I really enjoyed the harmony singing, haka and poi demonstration. Having a smaller group (approx 13) was a real advantage, it made getting on and off the bus much quicker and was much friendlier. Had a fantastic day.

We were picked up at the pier with no doubt as to who Hinterland was. Very well signed.
Brad knows everything there is to know about the Rotorua area. Maori Village was wonderful as Brad knew the right time to see the geizer working. The Mud pools and the oven for steamed puddings was really interesting and we got to see things that other people on the Cruise ship were very envious of. Kiwi Fruit tour on the way was very informative.Little things like the story of the Silver Fern.Brad knows it all and you couldn't help but listen. All in all the day was easily the best day we had in the whole of our New Zealand experience and we would have no hesitation in recommending Hinterland Tours to anyone who is visiting Taurunga.

Kae was waiting for me when I got off the cruise ship with my name on a sign. We toured around in a clean air conditioned mini bus. Both the driver and Kae are ever so nice and friendly and very informative. It was not often Kae sat in silence. Always discussing our surroundings clearly. We stopped at a couple of places, a kiwi farm, (interesting to see how the kiwi fruit grows, they have a reasonably priced souvenir shop) and then to a nice seaside place for lunch (you pay for lunch, coffee shop style) before we reached Rotoua. The Maori village was amazing. The sulfur smell took a little to get used to at first. Best not go there with a hangover. Lots of things here that made me marvel at nature like the bubbling mud pool and hot springs. Hot tubs and the geysers were incredible. The culture and artwork/carvings were very interesting. There is a lot to be learned about these people and their way of life here. Quite amazing. Saw a traditional dance and the performers (who live there) got the whole crowd into doing some of their dance movements. Quite fun. Definitely well worth going to if your visiting the north island. Highly recommend going with Hinterland Tours. Not only are they cheaper than the ships tour, the people operating this are fantastic genuine 'real' local people with lots of knowledge.
I can't remember the drivers name but the ole chap was ever ever so good to me. The nicest kind I can describe. He helped me a lot that day as I was injured on the cruise ship. Over the top help that I never expected this day and age. There are still wonderful people left in this world :)

Tauranga is the biggest and most important port in New Zealand; it is also beautiful as you sail into the harbor.

We had previously arranged a tour with Hinterland Tours for a small group and Andy, our driver/guide, was waiting for us. Andy took us on a comprehensive tour that included: stopping at a kiwi farm and learning about the production and shipping of this delicious fruit; walking through the area with the boiling hot springs and bubbling mud pools; drives through forests, stops for honey, etc. We also went to Rotorua and visited the ‘Living Maori Village” where we saw how people lived in this geothermal area, viewed the geysers and had the chance to see a cultural performance. The entire day of driving allowed us the opportunity to see the beautiful countryside. At the end of the day Andy gave us a tour of Tauranga.

Andy answered all our questions and provided us with a very interesting and informative commentary while driving. Andy was not only a safe driver but also courteous, informative and accommodating in every way.

Making the arrangements via email for the tour with Kae at Hinterland Tours was simple. She answered every email in a speedy, professional manner. Hinterland Tours gave us a wonderful program with a top notch guide and we highly recommend them

Rosie picked us up from our Cruise ship and 10 of us set off on a custom tour. We went to a Kiwi orchard, and then to redwoods and a gorgeous waterfall. We stopped for lunch by the water, and then spent the afternoon at the Maori living village. We did a tour and then watched a show at the cultural center. It was educational, inspiring, and beautiful. Rosie could not have been more helpful or fun. She kept us entertained, showed us everything we wanted to see and had us back to the ship in plenty of time for our departure. We would highly recommend this tour.

We did the Highlights Tour in January 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Richard was an excellent driver/tour guide who provided a wonderful commentary during the entire trip. He picked us up from our cruise ship at Tauranga and took us to Rotorua via a honey producer and a kiwi fruit farm where he gave us fascinating information from his personal experience picking kiwi fruit. The Rotorua city tour was great and the visit to Whakarewarewa Maori village was a highlight with the cultural experience and geothermal features. The trip back to Tauranga was on a different road so we got to see a lot of the area. Highly recommended!

We had the best day for our shore adventure with Richard from Hinterland Tours. He gave us a tour of Tauranga with its beautiful beaches on the way out of town with interesting facts. On the way we visited a waterfall and were lucky enough to see white water rafters coming down. We then stopped and saw a Kiwi Fruit farm which was really interesting to learn about this Export from New Zealand. The highlight was the living Maori Village at Rotarua where people actually live and work in this thermal spring village. Don't go to the government one this one is totally authentic and helps the locals. We had a show from the traditional owners and then one of the residents did our tour of the village. It was fascinating. Richard was excellent in making sure we saw the geisa at its best. He was entertaining and really informative. We then had a lovely lunch by a lake and then back to the ship in plenty of time. Highly recommend this tour they were very accommodating and knowledgeable with a small group in a modern airconditioned van. They even dropped myself and partner back in town so we could get some wifi and contact home before a very short stroll back to the ship.

We booked an all day tour that no one else did. Richard Nicholson had a van of another tour and said he could handle ours along with theirs. He rode back and forth, picking up and dropping off. We all got to see what we came to see.

Recommend Hinterland highly !
