An absolute must do!

Some advice on which route to take (particularly as we found the signs and track map to be VERY confusing!).

Start by the lifeguard service building (where the only toilets are located) and head up the path. You go through a couple of gates and get to a split.

Left takes you up a series of very steep stairs. It's about 800ish metres this way. If you are a bit on the shorter side and/or unfit, this will definitely be the harder way to go. It's also the *most* crowded. It took us about 45 min and we're about average fitness.

Right takes you up a much wider path that is quite steep in a couple of places. It is about 1,300ish metres to the top. It does have a bit of gravel so it can be slippery but if you wear decent shoes, you'll be fine (you'll need more than jandals for either track). The views on this path are amazing! It only took us 30 min to go up this path, even though it was longer. It really is the easier path.

If you want the challenge of the stairs (the left path), consider going down the right path as the views over the ocean are stunning.

At the summit, it's a bit confusing because there are 3 paths. If you come up from the left side (the stairs path), the ocean/right path is directly across from you. To the left (as you enter the summit area from the stairs) is a sign for another path, which seems to take you down the 4WD path. Everyone we spoke to suggested you avoid that one but we didn't try it.

One final note, if you are going down the "right" path described above, you get to a couple of splits in the path - just stay right. That gets you back to the beginning.

Kiwis in our 50s and 60s, had never done this walk so planned a holiday encompassing Mt maunganui. Parking was difficult but after finding one walked to start of track and decided to do the 4wd track. This is wide, fine gravel, amazing views but steep just about the whole way. Had to take regular stops to get to the top. Finally made it and felt very relieved and proud that we had done it. Took all the photos then decided to take the stairs option down. This was manageable for us but don't think we could have climbed up this way. Well worth doing this walk but plan your route according to your own fitness, health and ability.

It took us a while (not very fit) but we talked up to the top and the views were AMAZING! Highly recommend the walk if you are able. Be sure to take water as it was extremely hot in the sun, there are toilets etc near the surf club down the bottom before you enter the track.

Possibly one of our great short walks . A little bit fitness would help quite steep in places but we’ll worth the effort for view and photo opportunities. Great to have quick catch up with our Greatest All Black who was on his second run up to top still a great New Zealander and gentalman.

It’s absolutely one of the most amazing view in NZ. The mountain is not very high and the hiking took me 25 mins one way. There are lots of stairs so remember to wear comfortable shoes. The view from the top is totally worth the effort!

There is more than one option to reach the top, but all require some physical exercise and can be achieved by almost all ages if you take your time.
Apart from the fresh air the views are worth the effort.

Not easy to find the 4-wheel drive track which was advertised as less strenuous. Labelling on the whole poor (tourists don't know which bay is which (label the tracks Steep with Steps, or 4-wheel Drive). The steeper track is quite strenuous and perhaps needs to be marked as that. Great views en route and at the top, worth the considerable time and effort.

Walking the base or climbing to the summit is a must do at the mount be prepared. The terrain is uneven and the steps are quiet steep so make sure that you wear appropriate closed shoes. One part of the track up is literally 200+ steps to the top all of different sizes above sea level so take your time and be prepared to sweat! There are seats are different stages of the steps for those that need the rest but the views going up looking over the mount and the satisfaction of reaching the top / the views from the top are definitely worth it. On the way down the other side is uneven elevated slope so be careful of slipping. You can enter the base track and do the summit walk from either side of the mount - from the beach side next to the surf club or from the pilot bay / top 10 park. Recommend doing it early in the morning when its not so hot.
