NZ v India ODI a great day out

A lovely feel to this old school ground with most of the seating on grassy banks. I would recommend taking your own chair for comfort. Plenty of food and drink outlets. Good views throughout. Easy to find. Highly recommended

To hold a test match
Nov 2019
To hold a test match here, as was initiated against England was fine.
However, for future large scale games, I would suggest a larger selection of amenities within the grounds complex.

Idiosyncratic - but I loved it!
Nov 2019
I attended the stadium's inaugural Test Match between NZ and England.
In advance of my visit I had read the ground regulations and seen photographs online and checked my understanding of the seating rules by email correspondence with the stadium. By this means I was aware of the value of buying a fold up chair to take to the match each day.
Having watched Test Matches at all stadia in England and Australia it was bizarre to arrive with my own chair and secure a vantage point each day at which to set my pitch.
The rule about full size chairs only being allowed at the top of the embankment behind the white line worked well in that those who sat on low chairs or the grass did not have their views of the match obstructed. For those of us sat on chairs behind the white line it was akin to being in the front circle at the theatre and looking over the top of the stalls. It gave a great view.
As another reviewer has pointed out, the fact that the stadium is a bowl allowed spectators to walk the perimeter path immediately behind the embankment but watch the match while doing so.
Thought needs to be given to the toilet facilities. These temporary installations were of variable standard.
There was a total absence of shade so hats, water and sun block are essential.
Once I accustomed myself to the novel layout of the ground I loved it.

Just start by saying I am 81. Having attended cricket at the SCG and suburban grounds in Sydney I was unprepared for the primitive ground used for a test match. As visitors from Australia we had no rugs or fold up chairs. I sat on a concrete step in the sun all day and was totally unable to return for another day of the test
Lack of any seating or shelter appalled me

First Test Match
Nov 2019 • Friends
A wonderful venue to watch cricket.
I attended all five days of the first test match.

Yes it was very hot with a lack of shade, but how often can you have the weather we did.

On the first day I laid down on the bank, it was uncomfortable. I bought a chair for day 2.

For visitors of future matches, maybe sell or hire chairs on site. It would be a great moneymaker.

Terrific venue

We attended the first two days of Mount Maunganui's first ever Test match, v England. We had one day in a hospitality marquee where the Kiwis on our table were friendly and we had a bit of banter about cricket and the World Cup, and some more general chats about New Zealand, their work, our holiday and our background: we felt very welcome. The next day we were on the terrace, with a chair and table, but spent some time on the grassy bank with friends.
Food and drink offerings, all temporary, were diverse and of good quality.
Being built as a bowl, there are great sightlines, and it's possible to wander round the ground and still watch the cricket
Great place - highly recommended

The newest Test Match Ground
Nov 2019
We went to NZ from the UK to follow the England Cricket Team on their tour of the Country. The Bay Oval is the 120th and latest ground in the world to stage a Test Match. It is a beautifully presented ground with Mount Maunganui as a backdrop. The event was really well managed with easy entry, good toilet facilities, free water and a range of catering options. There are very few seating stands as the ground is mainly grass embankments but at the vast cost of $NZ6 per collapsable seat from Bunnings down the road, we had the most comfortable 5 days. The ground could do with more areas to sit out of the sun although free factor 50 sun cream was available all day. This will be sound like sour grapes as England lost but the wicket needs to provide more pace and bounce as the cricket at times was very tedious. Overall a ground the locals should be proud of and the resort of Mount Maunganui is an excellent place to stay for a week or more.

Test Match NZ v Eng
Nov 2019
What a great test match! The weather turned up with solid sun in the high twenties for all five days, the cricket was ebb and flow with NZ coming out on top (I’m an Eng fan).
Trouble is, there is zero shade for any more than a couple of people. It’s a fabulous grass banked ground and copes well with the higher numbers but when you’ve got 27deg heat (& in NZ, this is like 35 deg with skin burn time very short) shade is needed!
Great water stations around the ground.
The bars were well staffed with good people but the licence was ridiculous in only allowing two drinks per person, if you’re in a group of four, two of you have to go every time! Beer choice was a bit poor with only Monteiths and they even ran out of one of the beers one day!
Other than that, it was good debut for the ground with some great weather and great cricket.

First test match at the ground
Nov 2019 • Friends
My first time at a stadium with mostly a byo seat set up. We spent the start of the game on our choice of the grass banks with a great view of the pitch. The 2 days we spent here were v hot with a few places to seek shade. Bring your own water bottle to fill up at the free filling stations around the ground. The food choices are ok, options ranged from Thai to hot dogs. Wear a hat and lots sun cream.
