Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We did this easily late one afternoon. A bit of a climb, but certainly manageable by people with modest fitness, if you take your time. The final climb up the rock requires a little more effort to pull yourself up using the very handy chains that have been installed in the rock. But the view is magnificant. Highly recommend this.

Despite the height, it was actually a quick and easy hike up to the rock. And the views were out of this world. The blue water, the bays, the village were all so postcard perfect. The trail was easy to find and follow. Definitely do this walk.

Beautiful scenery - a medium grade slope walk. Not a lot of car parking up the hill where the track starts.

Definitely worth the walk.
Amazing views 360 degrees of whangaroa harbor and surrounding areas. Quite a tough walk if you aren't fit. But well worth it.

St Pauls cap/ Rock, Whangaroa Harbour offers the climber a great view over the harbour. Worth the steep climb up to the top of the volcanic rock/ Boulder. This is a free walk, no fees.
Whangaroa Harbour is signposted from Kaeo. 1 hour from Kaitaia, 30 minutes north Kerikeri, one hour twenty from Whangarei.
There is a car park at the beginning of the walk, or you can park at the bottom of Old Hospital Road. Afterwards have a drink at the local hotel or game fish club.
We found plenty to do in this community. We hired kayaks, went fishing and enjoyed other walks looking at volcanic boulders and rocks.
We spent a week exploring the harbour and nearby beaches.
Accomodation ranges from backpackers to upmarket.

this was a must do on our north trip - grateful and thankful - gorgeous walk up and the rewards are plenty - I am personally petrified of heights but was determined (with amazing coaxing from my whanau especially 20 year old son) to master the chains and height - just sooooooooooooo beautiful - the rock formations - amazing art of nature

Went for a walk up the rock one evening. The weather was a bit dull and very windy but still an enjoyable walk. Beware that when it’s dry the path is quite slippery so take good walking shoes and walking poles if you have dodgy knees!

This is a great climb that gives you 360 degree views from the top.
There is vehicle parking close to the start of the walk.
The walk to the base of the rock is reasonably easy with a couple of steeper parts. These could be slippery if it had rained recently.
Once you get to the base of the rock you could be forgiven if you felt you didn’t think you would make it to the top. But please give it a try, using the chains it’s not nearly as hard as it looks.
And once you’re at the top you’ll be thankful you made the effort.
The views are amazing and well worth the effort.

Short walk uphill. Magnificent views of Whangaroa Harbour. The volcanic rock uplifted creating a wall around the harbour is well worth a visit. Climb St Paul's and see it all.
