A wee gem, stunning scenery. Lovely camp spot, with clean shower and toilet facilities. We stayed in Pukeko lodge, which doesn’t have kitchen facilities yet, but there is an excellent kitchen on site for all to use. Great restaurant/cafe, awesome hospitality! Keen to go back in summer and explore the area more.

Highly recommend Awastone rafting trip. Our guide was brilliant, very friendly and knowledgeable and we felt very safe with him. The campground and toilets (although we didn’t stay) appeared immaculately clean and the food included in the rafting trip price was yummy. Having seen the campsite would love to go back and stay there. Great spot.

I took my kids to do this activity, none of us had any rafting experience and the kids ranged in ages from 8 - 13. We all had an absolute ball and everyone felt really safe at all times. The kids spent half of the trip swimming alongside the raft and loved the few bits of bumpy water we encountered. Our guide was really personable and made the trip enjoyable for us. It was a very mild ride and the scenery was really nice. Was expensive to do with a family but was definitely worth it for the experience.

awastone offers a variety of rafting experiences - we chose the 'day long' [4hrs] canyons tour. meeting at the awastone cafe, we were driven with the 'raft' - a substantial zodiak - 45 mins to the start point. safety lecture over, we boarded and braced for the rapids, knowing what to do if we fell overboard. such was the skill of our guide connor that we did not. he guided the boat with oars [we were occasionally asked to paddle] as we alternated between bumpy rapids and smooth stretches. luckily it was beautiful day and the gorges we went through [some used as lord of the rings locations] are astounding. we stopped for a picnic lunch [take a bottle of wine if you want] in a great setting - they even brought a table to set up the food. then onwards to the landing location where truck and trailer were waiting for us to haul the zodiac out. 4wd necessary and quite dramatic! drive back to the cafe was followed by tea and snacks to unwind. another truly memorable nz experience and kudos to connor for being such a competent skipper. even though we sat throughout, the effort of bracing left one fairly exhausted, so not for the unfit or infirm, but we'd recommend this heartily to anyone else.
