For a city the size of Rivas, Nicaragua this cathedral is very big showing the importance of the Catholicism in Nicaragua. The beautiful silver altar is actually older than the cathedral as it survived a major earthquake that took down the church. The fresco in the cupola is very interesting and depicts a sea battle between a ship symbolizing the church of Peter which survives and ships that represent communism and naziism which are burned and are capsizing. I wish they would work on restoring the fresco and other parts of the church. The church is only open on certain days, so you will not be able to enter every day. …

A robust cathedral right in the center of Rivas. The adjacent Parque Central is freshly painted in the same colors as the cathedral mainly white and gray. Walking through the portal one enters a big hall with 18 columns supporting a large wooden roof. The interior decoration is simple. Remarkable are the statues that are all dressed up in fine clothes. A bare chested Adonis like Saint is wearing a glittering blue loincloth. Considering the entire population of Rivas town is around 30,000 it is big building and testimony to the importance of the catholic religion here.…
