Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Tane Moana is definitely worth visiting. We just wanted to walk to the kauri (return), not do the full track from Ngungaru to Matapouri. Despite extensive googling we could not find out where the kauri was on the track, although it sounded like it was closer to the Ngungaru end (which it turns out it is). When we arrived at the Ngungaru end of the track, signs indicated that the full track was closed due to logging operations. It was not clear where the logging was and whether we could still walk to the kauri. Being law abiding kiwis, we then drove to the Matapouri end. Again, the track closed signs were in place and it was clear that logging was occurring at this end of the track. However, Te Araroa Walkway signs indicated that a detour was in place and after talking to a local we decided to proceed. It was a public holiday, so there were no logging operations. It turns out that the Te Araroa Trust have negotiated for walkers to pass through the logging area from north to south BUT not south to north. This wasn't clear to us until we had passed through the logging area, and as we were doing a return walk, we had to come back through the same logging area. There were no problems. The logging was due to be completed by the end of 2017 and it looked like it was close to being finished. We subsequently found information about this on the Te Araroa website.

Anyway, to our walk. The return walk to the tree from Clements Rd, Matapouri was just under 9 kms and took us 4.45 hours. This included 35 minutes at the tree and numerous photo stops. We were also very slow on some steep sections of the walk which were slippery due to recent rain. Younger and fitter walkers would be faster - we are in our 60s and moderately fit. The walk includes some beautiful bush and there was a lot of bird song, but it was hard to see birds because of the high canopy. The coastal views are now blocked by trees. The track was well marked. The steep sections in and out of gullys would not be suitable for young children and boots or solid walking shoes are really required. Shortly before we reached Tane Moana, there is a DOC sign (the first DOC sign we saw), indicating that the tree is 5 min away and that it is 1 hour to Waiotoi Rd (the Ngungaru end) and 2 hours back to Clements Rd.

Tane Moana is the largest coastal kauri. The track is easy to get to from Nganaru, - the best way to go. the walk out is lovely but you will need a pick up car at Matapouri. Once you come out there is maybe a 2km walk along a local quiet road to the beach proper. Take $$$ for ice creams at the Matapouri shop.
Do not do this after rain it will be very slippery

Although it was tricky to find the start of the shorter trail at the Ngunguru end we enjoyed our visit to this special tree. We had our 5yr old in town and although the journey there took a little bit of encouragement coming back was a breeze. The tree is very impressive and weeping some sap which just adds to the impressive nature of it.

I live in Tutukaka and this tree is a half hour walk from our house, so about once a week we walk from here up to the tree and through to the Salt Air Cafe for breakfast. This takes us about 1 and 3/4 hours. The track is well marked with orange arrows ,but at times the track becomes overgrown with long grass and overhanging scrub/trees. Being a great walk it would be good if the track was maintained a bit more. I have done the track through from Clements road in Matapouri as well pretty slippery when it has been raining otherwise a great walk as well Unless you want to do the return walk, (about 4 hours) it pays to have a vehicle at the other end I agree with some of the other comments. The tree could be marked a little better closer to the tree which is set back off the track and if you are busy talking you could walk straight past it The tree is worth the walk and there are some nice view points

The track is closed due to Kauri dieback. This information wasn't available until we actually got to the walk entrance.

This is a very pleasant walk mostly thru hilly forestry land. There are no road signs for the Waitoi Road entrance but it's easy enough to find. Waitoi Road is unsealed towards the walk entrance.

Its well worth the walk, and while there are not a lot of viewpoints along the track this is a great coastal walk.

Nice walk via forest and worth a try. Most enjoyable walk and forests are full of birdlife. Recommend that you use a vehicle pick up at the other end if a bit unfit or very hot day.

Enter from Clements road at Matapouri & walk all the way through to Waiatoi road in Ngunguru, approx 10k. Be aware can get muddy after heavy rain & a reasonable level of fitness is required. Great loop for Trail Running or Walking, Enjoy the Bird Life & Tane Moana. One of the best walks in the Whangarei Region

We went for our walk to Tane Moana from the Ngunguru end of the Matapouri track. We did not go for the complete walk as we didn't have time.. Started uphill over some farmland and stiles, through a newly planted pine plantation and then through some beautiful native forest. We walked solidly for about half and hour, mainly uphill, to get there and it was great exercise. Pretty views through the trees, although these will disappear as the pines grow. I did think the signage through the forestry road was pretty average and we were not sure we were on the right track till we saw the Department of Conservation sign when we were nearly there. The tree is quite lovely, its always such a privilege to see such and old tree and the totara/rimu/kanuka trees on the way up were also worth the walk.
