During a two week stay locally, back in February 2016, we visited both here and the marina on a couple of occasions. We spent many hours at different nearby bays and beach catching the sun. A truly wonderful area and coastline.

We were on a drive out from Whangarei on a rainy day so didn't venture further than the marina area. There's a plinth with propeller from a ship sunk as a reef dive which according to a local had an interesting history as a spy ship. Handily, there's a general store with fuel pumps on the main road - the... More

Peaceful, clear water, nice colours amazing view. Unfortunately the tide was high so i wasn't able to cross the sea but it was still really enjoyable. I wish I could have swim though but its winter and I wasn't so courageous.

While here I tried to find a walk to do. I came across one that takes you out to the lighthouse, which is on an island. I made it across to the island but didn't carry on to the lighthouse as I did not want to get stranded (it looked like the beach at the bottom between the headland and... More

Peace and Quiet, another world - just 3 hours from central Auckland. Tutukaka is like stepping back 20 years, just fantastic.

Drive along Landowners Lane and park on Reserve Car Park and then walk over the headland for stunning all round views. If the tide is low then walk down to the beach and climb up to the lighthouse on the island of Scenic Reserve for more fabulous views of Tutukaka harbour and its many bays and further along the coastline.... From trips out to the Poor Knights for diving and fishing; to walks along Matapouri BEach and Wooley's Bay.... or a surf at Sandy Bay.... There is much to do, fresh salty air and views and experiences galore. Whale Bay and its secluded nature was a special highlight for us.

Nice little walk - make sure you check the tides. Easy climb down to the beach but after heavy rainfall, the climb up and down to the lighthouse was a little more treacherous. But the views from the top were well worth it, and we loved the harassment by 3-4 very protective Mr Fantails!

Lush green grass track from the carpark over the hill and down to the rocky headland. Great ocean views, with rocky coves, and beautiful blue water. Lighthouse at the end. Great walk and views for a few hours.
